Time Draws Near
Time Draws Near
We have reached Thursday of Passion Week and time draws near. We come to a crucial time in the ministry of Jesus and God’s scheme of redemption.
The enemies are plotting (Mk14:1-11)
Chief Priests and scribes were looking how to kill Him, just not during the Passover Festival for it may cause a riot.
While the enemies were plotting there was the preparation for the burial by the anointing by Mary
Judas goes off to the chief priests in order to betray Jesus
The disciples are gathering (Mk14:12-16)
At the instruction of Jesus, specific instructions are given for preparation for the Last Passover to the apostles.
Jesus had, or at least it is implied, prearranged this so everything would be just so when they got to Jerusalem. For everything was just so.
The time is short, the cross is less then a day away (Mk15:22-38)
The capture (if you call it that) the conviction (at the mock trial) was leading to the cross by the next morning.
The denial, the scattering was just hours away too. The scattering to the sheltering in fear was just a short time away too.
Jesus knew what was coming and did not do anything to stop it (Mk10:33)
33 saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles.
What do you see, what do you notice in this verse, what is the promise? - - - He will be delivered up, will be condemned, will put put to death at hand of Gentiles.
Set up and History
Set up and History
Knowing the setting, the history of something oftentimes gives us a better understanding of something when we then look at it. The Passover was not something new, it was something observed.
Passover Feast (Deu16:1-8)
HAVE EVERYONE TURN HERE TO DEU16!
1 “Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover to the Lord your God, for in the month of Abib the Lord your God brought you out of Egypt by night. 2 “You shall sacrifice the Passover to the Lord your God from the flock and the herd, in the place where the Lord chooses to establish His name.
3 “You shall not eat leavened bread with it; seven days you shall eat with it unleavened bread, the bread of affliction (for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste), so that you may remember all the days of your life the day when you came out of the land of Egypt. 4 “For seven days no leaven shall be seen with you in all your territory, and none of the flesh which you sacrifice on the evening of the first day shall remain overnight until morning.
5 “You are not allowed to sacrifice the Passover in any of your towns which the Lord your God is giving you; 6 but at the place where the Lord your God chooses to establish His name, you shall sacrifice the Passover in the evening at sunset, at the time that you came out of Egypt.
7 “You shall cook and eat it in the place which the Lord your God chooses. In the morning you are to return to your tents. 8 “Six days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a solemn assembly to the Lord your God; you shall do no work on it.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
Do you notice the time frame? - Month of Abib, that is first month of the Jewish calendar, this was changed name to month of Nissan after the Babylonian captivity by the use of the Assyrian calendar.
Do you notice a location? - at the place the Lord establishes His name
Do you notice the instructions?
What was the reason for the Passover Festival?
Commemoration of deliverance (Exo12:1-28, 43-49)
Do you know why they were to do it annually?
Exo12 gives the instructions given to Moses and to Aaron regarding the passover, what they were to instruct the Hebrew people to do. Very specific instructions are given for the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened bread.
What they were to do in preparation, what they were to do in celebrating and what they were to do in future generations.
THere is also instructions on who was to partake of it and when. you
Special time (occasion) for Jesus
Special for time was limited (Lk22:14-15)
14 When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;
Special for was with ones He loved (Jn13:1)
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
HAVE EVERYONE TURN NOW TO OUR PASSAGE MK14:17-26
Betrayal foretold
Betrayal foretold
A time of gathering a time of telling what is about to transpire too.
Mk14:
17 When it was evening He came with the twelve. 18 As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me—one who is eating with Me.”
Mk14:
19 They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20 And He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who dips with Me in the bowl.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
We see the time frame (Mk14:17)
It is evening
We see the participants (Mk14:17)
It is the twelve
We see the announcement (MK14:18)
Public announcement one was going to betray Him
We see the response (Mk14:19)
Grieved they respond, surely not I
We see Jesus words (Mk14:20-21)
This is all a part of God’s grand plan, but woe to the one who will betray Him.
More facts (Mt26:25; Jn13:23-30)
There is the private conversation with Judas
25 And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself.”
Private question from John and response found in Jn13:23ff
John asks Lord who is it (v25)
Jesus tells this.
26 Jesus then answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
Jn13:26
And that lead to the betrayal (v.27); and the disciples did not understand at this time, but would that very evening.
Now that brings us to the Lord’s supper being instituted
Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper
Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper
With the explained symbolism by Jesus to the Apostles the Lord gives the example and instructions for the Lord’s Supper.
22 While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 “Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
Uses unleavened bread to represent His body (Mk14:22)
Uses the cup to represent His blood of the New Covenant (MK14:23-24)
Do you remember how a covenant was entered into?
Do you remember how a covenant was ratified?
Do you remember what cannot happen when a covenant is ratified?
Then the bold proclamation (Mk14:25)
What is the proclamation?
I’m going to come back to this and discuss the bold proclamation more in a few minutes.
The end of the Supper (Mk14:26)
The end of the Supper was with a song and a departure.
The bold proclamation some looks, some thoughts.
Look at Matthews comments (Mt26:28-29)
28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. 29 “But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”
Look at Luke’s comments (Lk22:16-18)
16 for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves;
18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.”
LK22:18
In Luke it adds that the bread will not be eaten again until it is fulfilled.
It it forthtelling the wedding supper of the lamb (Mt22:2-24; Lk14:15-24; Rev19:9)?
There are many who believe that the Lords Supper with the Lord will not happen again until the wedding supper of the Lamb.
You can look up those passages to get an idea of where some get that idea.
Personally I have to take it that it is the Lord’s supper in the church, in the kingdom today as Paul mentions.
It is the Lord’s supper in the church today (1Cor10:16-17)?
16 Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.
Paul’s description of the Supper
_____________________________________________________
It is a memorial (1Cor11:23-25; Heb9:16; Mt26:28; Eph1:7)
It is a proclamation (1Cor11:26)
It is a communion (1Cor10:16-17)
It is an observance (1Cor11:27-34)
___________________________________________________
It is a memorial (1Cor11:23-25; Heb9:16; Mt26:28; Eph1:7)
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
16 For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it.
speaks of the body of death makes the new covenant possible and in Mt26 and in Eph1 about the shedding of blood for the remission of sins.
heb
28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.
It is a memorial (1Cor11:23-25; Heb9:16; Mt26:28; Eph1:7)
It is a proclamation (1Cor11:26)
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
It is a memorial (1Cor11:23-25; Heb9:16; Mt26:28; Eph1:7)
It is an observance (1Cor11:27-34)
It is a proclamation (1Cor11:26)
It is a proclamation (1Cor11:26)
It is a communion (1Cor10:16-17)
It is a communion (1Cor10:16-17)
It is a communion (1Cor10:16-17)
It is an observance (1Cor11:27-34)
We have already looked at this passage from 1COR10 as is it the Lord’s Supper (communion) of the church (kingdom) today.
But still one more thing we need to look at
It is an observance (1Cor11:27-34)
It is an observance (1Cor11:27-34)
16 Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.
Have everyone turn to 1Cor11:27ff
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep.
31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.
33 So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will arrange when I come.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
This observation is to be done with reverence (in worthy manner) -expand
This observation is to be done with self-examination - expand
This observation is to be done together
This observation is to be done often - exampled 1st day of week (Act20:7)
7 On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his message until midnight.
7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.
Final thoughts
Jesus is our Passover lamb and our passover (1Cor5:7)
Jews celebrated for deliverance from bondage from Egypt
Christians celebrate for deliverance from bondage of sin
