#12 Genesis 19 & 20
GENESIS 19
Adonai means “lord” or
“master”
Vss. 13 – 14 the word is
Yud - Heh – Vav – Heh
Vs. 18 Lot says
“please, no my lord…”
NOT referring to God
More than half of the
N.T. is O.T. quotes
1
LOT’S SONS-IN-LAW WOULD NOT
LEAVE SODOM
Didn’t believe the
Angels
Angel is a “messenger
from God”
Sons-in-law were men
of Sodom
The two daughters of
Lot were surely NOT
his only 2 children
Families were ALWAYS
large unless there were
problems
2
LOT ASKS TO GO TO A NEARBY
CITY FOR SHELTER
Matzah = unleavened
bread, provides a link
between Sodom and the
Egyptian Exodus
Angels tell Lot to go to the
hills…… he says “no”, wants
to go to a city
Lot preferred city life
Had given up life as a
shepherd
A shadow of the future
Northern Kingdom that would
seek gentile ways
3
LOT WAS A
WEAK MAN
Lot much like a
“carnal Christian”
Lot did NOT renounce
his faith
Yet, God still saved Lot
Tzo’ar = small city
V29: Because Abraham
pled for Lot’s life, God
saved him
4
LOT CHANGES HIS MIND
5
Bible gives only a brief
account of the cataclysm
We’re told destruction
came from the sky
Brimstone = sulfur
Burning Sulfur used to
destroy city’s garbage
dumps
Fire is symbolic of
purging evil and refining
precious metals
Bible’s main point is the
CAUSE for the
destruction, not the
details of it
THE DESTRUCTION
OF SODOM
6
✦V26: Pillar of Salt
✦Lot’s wife told she should “not (be) looking back”
✦A Hebrew idiom meaning “to dally or hesitate”
✦Lot’s wife suffered the same fate as Sodom
Did Abraham believe Lot had been saved?
In Abraham’s bargaining session, Lot was not
mentioned
The HOPE was that Lot had remained “righteous”
Abraham “prayed” for the survival of the righteous
8
BIRTH OF MOAB
AND AMMON
Lots 2 daughters were
concerned they wouldn’t
fulfill their duty as women
Family believed the world
had ended (no other
people left alive)
Thought they were the new
Noah
Lot descended into more
and more FEAR
God does NOT bring fears
of this kind
9
THE SAD
EPITAPH OF LOT
MOAB
Daughters have children
by their father, Lot
These children are Moab,
then Ammon
Moab and Ammon existed
as nations well-before the
Exodus
Amman (Jordon) is Arabic
pronunciation of Ammon,
occupies the same area
10
GENESIS 20
Gerar
Shur (wall)

Kadesh
Abraham moves
from Hebron

Gerar, area will
become Phillistia
King of Gerar,
Abimelech
Kadesh same as
Kadesh-Barnea

Shura = shur-a
means “a wall”11
