Intro:
Do you love God?
Matthew 22:34–36 (ESV)
34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
38 This is the great and first commandment.
20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
Do you love your brothers and sisters in Christ?
39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
What is genuine love?
9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.
Major theme: Genuine love
Everything that follows is an expression of that theme.
First, a general statement: abhor vs. hold fast & evil (πονηρός- morally wrong; other words in greek = prostitute our word pronagraphy) vs. good.
Love for Believers & God
10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.
12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
“brotherly affection” = family
“showing honor” = befriending low man on totem pole
“fervent in spirit” = could be a dative with article meaning “fervent by the Spirit”
vs. 12 all three statements flow and the all show trust or faith in God
contribute = physical needs and hospitality = life giving.
Dealing with People inside and outside the Church.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.
16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.
17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.
18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Persecution can come from both places
Rejoicing, weeping, etc. is winsome
1 Cor. 12:26
26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
Unity is broken by pride. Pride is broken by humility. Humility sees people not status and never sees self wisdom.
“evil” = injurious, dangerous
play on words κακός (evil) vs. καλός (beautiful, good, honorable)
Dealing with vengence
19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”
21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Deut. 32:35
Proverbs 25:21-22 The coals could mean one of two things: guilt or blessing of fire in a practical way.
Ends as started. First he said abhor evil cling to good. Now he ends by saying don’t be overcome with evil but overcome evil with good.
Conclusion:
All of these qualities are seen in the Lord’s life. And it is his life that we want to be seen in us!
