INTRODUCTION
If you been in the church long enough, you will have a bad exerience
But is that a reason to leave the church entirely
No matter what bad thing happened, Jesus did not do it, but He knows what mistreatment feels like.
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
Paul provides an example as well
But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.
1. JESUS WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU
1. JESUS WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
A. To leave the church because a member offended us is like divorcing a spouse because we do not like our boss. When we put faith in Jesus, we are never disappointed.
B. Jesus is never to blame
C. Love Jesus more than you love your congregation
In you, O Lord, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me!
2. DON’T LIVE IN THE SPIRITUAL PAST
2. DON’T LIVE IN THE SPIRITUAL PAST
A. A bad church experience may be difficult to overcome - NOT impossible
B. In comparison to Paul, our “bad” experiences are very minor
on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches.
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
Some may say “I just can’t....”
You can, you just don’t want to
If you get slapped on the cheek - turn the other
But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
3. BIBLICAL LOVE IS NOT AN EMOTION; IT’S A DECISION
3. BIBLICAL LOVE IS NOT AN EMOTION; IT’S A DECISION
Love seeks another’s best, so we can even love those we do not like
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
