INTRODUCTION:
1. Hate-Speech is a phrase that is referred to a lot in our day.
A. This term is thrown around when an individual does not appreciate, or is offended by, what someone else says.
1. Often times, this phrase gets employed tied to a biblical matter.
A. It comes in a number of different wrappings that all boil down to the same conclusion.
1. Whatever biblical concept they did not agree with was hate speech and usually tied to , whether or not the individual actually claims to be a Christian.
BODY:
1. The emotion of hating your brother is dealt with in the Scriptures and condemned as murder.
1 John 3:14–15 NKJV
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
A. Hating your brother is not warning him of God’s impending judgement; It is knowing he is lost and saying nothing.
1. God warned Ezekiel of this very thing!
Ezekiel 3:17–19 NKJV
17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: 18 When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. 19 Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.
Ezk
A. If Ezekiel warned Israel (His brethren), then he did not abide in death.
B. But if he did not warn them, then his soul was not delivered and he abided in death and eternal life did not abide in him.
1. Why?
A. Because to not warn his brothers was hating them and abiding in death.
B. Able’s blood was required at Cains hands.
Genesis 4:10 NKJV
10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
1 John
1 John 3:14–15 NKJV
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
B. John says we pass from death to life, because we love the brethren.
1. Notice when they both live or pass from death to life.
Ez
Ezekiel 3:21 NKJV
21 Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man that the righteous should not sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live because he took warning; also you will have delivered your soul.”
C. To love the brethren we must warn them to save their lives.
1 John 3:14–15 NKJV
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
Ezekiel 3:18–21 NKJV
18 When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. 19 Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul. 20 “Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die; because you did not give him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand. 21 Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man that the righteous should not sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live because he took warning; also you will have delivered your soul.”
1. This is the same for us as it was for Ezekiel.
James 5:19 NKJV
19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back,
James 5:19–20 NKJV
19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
James
A. Covering a multitude of sins is same concept as being innocent of their blood.
1. Paul declared...
Acts 20:26–27 NKJV
26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. 27 For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.
Acts 20
A. Peter said “love will cover a multitude of sins”
1 Peter 4:8 NKJV
8 And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”
B. And James said that “ fervent love” that Peter referred to is turning a wandering sinner back to God.
1. Therefore, to love your brother is to warn him and save his soul from death.
2. As Christians, we must understand that not everyone is going to like us and appreciate what we teach nor should we except it, because sometimes the truth is going to make them an enemy.
Galatians 4:16 NKJV
16 Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?
A. This does not mean that what we are teaching is hate-speech.
1. As a matter of fact, if we find ourselves in a spot where everyone is speaking well of us, we need to examine what we are teaching, because Jesus warned--
Luke 6:26 NKJV
26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For so did their fathers to the false prophets.
Luke
2. The Only way that all men are going to speak well of you is if you tickle their ears with things they want to hear.
2 Timothy 4:3–4 NKJV
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
3. If you stay faithful to the word of God, prepare yourself to be accused of hate-speech, bigotry, and all kinds of nasty accusations, but do not let this stop you.
A. Instead, take comfort in what Paul told Timothy...
2 Tim
2 Timothy 4:5–8 NKJV
5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
1. Paul’s exhortation to Timothy was—endure affliction and do the work and even if they lable you as one who spouts hate speech, you will receive a crown of righteousness for loving His appearing!
B. Brethren, remember when you are labeled with titles such as hate-speech, bigotry, and all other sorts of nasty things for the sake of Christ, you are blessed.
Matthew 5:11–12 NKJV
11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
1. Church, we need to stop running from this persecution and rejoice in it because if we are living right, it is going to happen.
2 Timothy 3:12 NKJV
12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
2 Timothy
CONCLUSION:
1. Stop being afraid of those who would label you because they are offended and proudly proclaim the saving message of the gospel, wearing it as a badge of your Christianity, not because of how important you are but because of how important Christ is to the lost.
2. Wear Him as your badge and you will be treated the same as He was; then and only then are you truly blessed.
3. Let us stop being afraid and be the church Jesus built that proudly proclaims we are like Him and gladly accept the consequences because in the end, it will be worth it.
4. If teaching the truth and being like Christ is hate-speech, then I will gladly accept that title!
5. Will you?
