I. INTRO
A. Where We’ve Been
a. Gifts o Spirit
1. God meeting practical needs supernaturally through his Spirit
i. Don’t know what wants u to do; where to go: Practical problem…Solution: Words o knowledge/wisdom
ii. Sick, disease: Practical problem…Solution: Healing by the H.S. through another follower o Jesus
iii. Here’s a practical problem we all face: not enough $$
-This is a problem
B. Where We’re Going
a. Here’s a practical problem we all face: not enough $$
1. This is a problem for ministry 2!!
2. GMCC trouble: roof needed fixing, Super Church needed a facelift, a box broke that rendered the projector unusable
i. These r all practical problems & we struggled w/the finances 2 solve…& God met ea. o these needs (at least in part) w/a Supernatural solution: GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION
ii. Illust: describe (w/out names) how God met the need financially
-Super Church: in board meeting some1 volunteered 2 contribute cost o paint
*treasure seekers room has had a similar contribution 4 it’s impending facelift
-projector trouble: another person volunteered the finances 2 c the part replaced
*All needed the work to actually be done, but that’s a diff. spiritual gift
b. 2day we’ll be discussing: GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION
C. Main Text
Ro 12
8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
D. Prayer
E. Context
a. We are all called to give!
1. Jesus says...
2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
i. Jesus said, “When you...” not if you.
2. The Spiritual ministry & gift of contribution is above & beyond that
i. Some of us r called 2 b Spirit empowered “Super-givers”
i. let’s talk about the...
ii. let’s talk about the...
b. It’s another “behind the scenes” gift. like Service/ exhortation
1.let’s talk about the...
II. BODY
A. Spiritual Gift of Contribution
a. Defined as the Supernatural ministry grace of giving a share of or imparting
to give a share of, impart
1. Contribution is usually, but not limited to monetary gifts
i. John the baptist used same word when he said...
Lk
11 And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”
-share w/ here is the same word contribute
ii. John is talking about all of our duty to contribute (this is a major characteristic o God’s people)
-above that, then, is the ministry & spiritual gift of Generous Contribution
iii. This might be called the spiritual gift of generous contribution o resources
2. (in our main vs) Paul is saying, if you’ve been called 2 contributing, then tap in2 God’s spirit 4 generosity!
b. Generosity is giving that displays a singleness of heart & intent
“generosity,” that is, a giving that displays a singleness of heart and intent (; , ). 59 Either meaning fits the present context very well. But it might be better to stick with the basic and well-attested meaning “simplicity.” 60 Paul is encouraging the one who gives to others to do so straightforwardly and without ulterior motives.
1. Paul is encouraging the 1 who gives to others to do so straightforwardly & w/out ulterior motives
i. Thus, generous does not describe the amount o the gift, but the sincerity o 1’s motives
ii. Perhaps the work o the spirit in this gift is the ability 2 give w/out ulterior motive / expectation o return on 1’s investment.
B. Generous contribution functions in two ways
-Paul says in...
The spiritual gift of contributing personal finances
2 Cor 8:2-5
2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.
3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord,
Moo, Douglas J.. The Epistle to the Romans (New International Commentary on the New Testament) (p. 770). Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.. Kindle Edition.
-This is clearly not the gift of the rich...
-The normal reaction of some1 who has little/nothing is 2 hoard, right?
*Look at this spiritual math: Holy Spirit Joy + poverty = generously willful giving beyond 1’s means
*This is supernaturally contributing beyond mere human capability & ingenuity, w/ maximum effectiveness
B. Generous contribution functions in two ways
a. The spiritual gift of contributing personal finances
1. Barnabas may have operated in the gift of contribution in personal finances
36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus,
37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
2. Illust. Bro-in-law Mike
3. Generous contribution may come upon many in God’s community to fulfill a particular need
i. Paul describes this occurence in about the contribution frm churches in Macedonia (read again)
ii. Moses records it in ex 35 & 36 … (describe building the tabernacle)
5 Take from among you a contribution to the Lord. Whoever is of a generous heart, let him bring the Lord’s contribution: gold, silver, and bronze;
Ex 35:5
3 And they received from Moses all the contribution that the people of Israel had brought for doing the work on the sanctuary. They still kept bringing him freewill offerings every morning,
Ex 36:3,5
5 and said to Moses, “The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.”
1. Generous contribution is
i. a stirring o the heart by the H.S. that motivates the person to joyful action &
ii. results in an abundance w/ great generosity
-The 2nd way Generous contribution functions is...
b. The spiritual gift of contributing through administering combined resources
1. We saw it w/Moses as he administered the peoples’ contributions to the workers: (re-read ex 36:3a)
2. We c the administration o combined resources in...
Acts 4:3
34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold
35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.
acts 4:35
34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold
35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.
56 So with severe famine everywhere, Joseph opened up the storehouses and distributed grain to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe throughout the land of Egypt.
3. Illust. P. Richard McSheere is part o a board that prayerfully considers how they will distribute funds 2 do the most good.
i. given to Green Mountain Christmas
C. Generous contribution functions to meet at least 2 needs
a. Minister to the poor or help in a crisis
1. We c this in 2 Cor as Paul raises $$ for the Jerusalem Church during a famine
i. also seen in that much was given 2 the contribution o the needy widows in their community
2. Personal Illust? - man came in office needing help getting 2 grandkids in Maine
b. Accomplish a God ordained project
1. We c this in Ex as God lead (through Moses) the building o the Tabernacle
III. CONCLUSION
A. Generous Contribution is o great value 4 meeting the needs o various Church’s min.
a. It may not be as glamorous & rarely in the spotlight…but it is nearly impossible 2 accomplish ministry if God doesn’t empower people w/the spiritual gift & ministry of Generous Contribution!
