TRUTH: GOD’S WORD IS MEANT TO DWELL

INTRODUCTION

Q - Have you ever had a song stuck in your head before?

YOU | ME | WE

“Baby Shark”
VBS theme song
It’s like these songs move into our life and stay there. Am I right? Like for those couple of days it’s as if Baby Shark is the only song in existence.
Q - Did you know that it’s supremely important what we allow to come into our lives?
Friends we have
Music we listen to
TV/Movies we watch
Places we go
>> What we choose to expose ourself to shapes us.
>> Not overnight, but over time.
As we continue discussing how to be dressed for success in our Christian life, it’s to our benefit God’s Word has something to say about this.

GOD’S WORD

Colossians 3:16 ESV
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
TRUTH: GOD’S WORD IS MEANT TO DWELL

dwell - “live in”
richly - “in an elaborate, generous, or plentiful way”
God’s Word was meant to “move into” or “take up residence” in our life.
CONTEXT:
The church at Colossae were being tempted to believe in the concept of “higher knowledge,” in when they were told what life was about in addition to Christianity.
Paul, the author of Colossians, addressed this issue in one verse.

I. BELIEVERS ARE TO BE RICH IN GOD’S WORD

What usually happens is that we are rich in nonsense; poor in God’s Word (music, tv shows, social media, etc). We should be rich in God’s Word and poor in nonsense.
dwell - “live in”
(music, tv shows, social media, etc)
richly - “in an elaborate, generous, or plentiful way”
God’s Word was meant to “move into” or “take up residence” in our life.
The word of Christ should find a home in our hearts. It shouldn’t come and go or show up occasionally, or be something we visit like a vacation spot.
The word of Christ should find a home in our hearts. It shouldn’t come and go or show up occasionally, or be something we visit like a vacation spot.
When God’s Word dwells in us God transforms us.
It’s in God’s Word where we see Christ. And when we see Christ, we are transformed.
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Q - Did you know that when we read God’s Word, God’s Word reads us?
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
2 Timothy 3:16 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
2 timothy 3:16
2 Timothy 3:17 ESV
17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Deuteronomy 6:6 ESV
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
Here’s the deal. Some of you know if you really give God all of you, you know you will have to change. You’re right and wrong.
Deuteronomy 6:4
Right - You will be changed if God’s Word dwells in you
Wrong - You will not be the one that does the changing. God’s will do the changing, because it’s not the book that does the speaking but it’s the very words of one, true, living God.
Psalm 19:7 ESV
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
Here’s what we got to understand, as believers of Jesus God’s Word is not optional for your life. Instead, your life should be about God’s Word.
TRUTH: GOD’S WORD IS MEANT TO DWELL
If the word of God is not at home in your life, then how on earth will you:
Get to know God?
Be close to God?
Walk with God?
Live your life according to God’s will?
Students, you cannot know God’s will apart from God’s Word.

II. GOD’S WORD IS TO BE DISPLAYED TO OTHERS

What is received most likely displayed. This is to be taken seriously, because what we give to people/others MATTERS.
When God’s Word dwells in you it’s known by others.
What we choose to take into our lives/minds, will go out.
We talk about what we know. >> If we do not know the Word of God, then we aren’t going to talk about it or live according to it.
We talk about what we know. >> If we do not know the Word of God, then we aren’t going to talk about it or live according to it.
What we need to understand students is that there is nothing more valuable to give to those in our lives expect the value of Jesus. Seriously.
What we need to understand
This happens in all kinds of ways throughout our day.

Application: How | H. E. A. R.

Q - Why should God’s Word dwell in our lives?
The love of Christ has been poured out into our hearts. Listen students, it’s silly for someone to have to tell Christians to get to the know God that loves them so much.
God has given us His Word to know Him. What’s the hold up?
Psalm 1:2 ESV
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 1:3 ESV
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
