Christ Set Us Free!
Freedom is the release from bondage.
We were held in bondage to sin through the law.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life [a]in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
The law of the Lord is to show us that we cannot uphold it.
The Law is meant to show us that we need something outside ourselves to live according to the standard of God.
We need someone to help us live in unity with God.
This comes through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
The Salvation Through Jesus Christ
God demands perfection of the law.
10 For whoever keeps the whole [a]law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
No one is perfect.
Everyone has sinned at least one point in their life
23 for all [a]have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
This means we are guilty of breaking all of the law and must suffer the consequence of that law
23 For the wages of sin is death
This means that everyone deserves death and separation from God. God created us to have relationship with Him, not to be separate from Him.
So He sent the Savior
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His [a]only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Jesus met the perfect demand of the law.
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Our salvation is in Christ alone by faith alone.
9 [a]that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, [b]resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, [c]resulting in salvation.
Jesus forgives us of our sin .
Sanctification Through The Holy Spirit
The freedom we experience is from the consequences of the law.
We must understand that we cannot fix ourselves by adhering to the law.
We must surrender our sin to the Holy Spirit.
so how does this happen.
3 For what the Law could not do, [b]weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of [c]sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is [d]alive because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies [e]through His Spirit who dwells in you.
12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you [f]must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Our obligation is to walk according to the Spirit.
We allow the Spirit of God to transform our hearts and minds.
When we become a Christian we have a desire to please the Spirit.
This means your “want to” changes.
The Holy Spirit will change your mindset as you surrender your flesh.
Surrendering your flesh is repentance.
Agreeing with God that your sinful and desire a change.
Freedom from the thing that you must have for salvation.
Many people are reluctant to receive Jesus Christ as their savior because they know they can’t meet his standards.
They are right.
But he took care of that on the cross.
He paid their sin debt.
Many Christians fail to mature in faith because they remain in bondage to the law.
Now that they are Christians they feel that they have to be morally superior to unbelievers.
They also believe that in order to stay saved they have to adhere to the rules a regulations of the Bible.
This is not the life Jesus saved us into.
This is the life of bondage he delivered us from.
Jesus wants us to live in a constant state of surrender to the Holy Spirit.
We Cannot Set Ourselves Free
Paul tells the Galatians that if they trust in circumcision and the law for their salvation, they have separated themselves from Christ.
For those that are trusting ion circumcision and law are trusting in themselves for salvation.
They declare that they do not need Jesus, but can earn it by adhering to the law.
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and [a]that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and [a]that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Paul makes some serious accusations for the legalist.
He says that they have been severed from Christ and fallen from grace.
The Gr. word for “severed” means “to be separated,” or “to be estranged.”
The word for “fallen” means “to lose one’s grasp on something.”
Paul’s clear meaning is that any attempt to be justified by the law is to reject salvation by grace alone through faith alone.
Those once exposed to the gracious truth of the gospel, who then turn their backs on Christ (Heb 6:4–6) and seek to be justified by the law are separated from Christ and lose all prospects of God’s gracious salvation.
Their desertion of Christ and the gospel only proves that their faith was never genuine (cf.
Lk 8:13, 14; 1Jn 2:19).
justified.
See notes on 2:16; Ro 3:24.
People that believe that they are in good standing with God based on their ability to obey the law are lost.
They have no part in the grace and mercy of God.
They willingly choose to depend on themselves for salvation rather than Jesus.
They will have an appearance of being a “Christian” because they live strong moral lives, but they are just as lost as the unbelieving sinner.
19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that [a]it would be shown that they all are not of us.
If the law is the way to salvation, then which ones must I be good at and which ones can I not transgress.
It is all or nothing.
When we stand before the Lord is he going to say because you drank a beer you can’t come to heaven.
Or you can’t come in because you cussed too much.
You can’t come in because you had a hot temper.
Or you can’t come in because you didn’t read your bible, pray or go to church enough.
You see how crazy this sounds?
AS crazy as this sounds this is the mindset of many Christians.
What will matter is how you answer the question, “What did you do with my son?” Did you receive him as your savior or did your reject him and try to earn your salvation on your own
Our Freedom Is Manifested In Love
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.
When we are saved and surrender to the Holy Spirit you can tell by your love for God and love for others.
The Spirit changes our hearts to adhere to the greatest commandments.
34 But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together.
35 One of them, [n]a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38 This is the great and [o]foremost commandment.
39 The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
Believers in Christ have a strong desire to love Him.
It is difficult to love someone that constantly criticizes us, but it is easy to love someone who gives us the freed om to fail and then help us get back on our feet.
True legalist hate God, because they know that they cannot measure up to His standard.
Christ has meet the standard and gives it to us by grace.
True freedom allows us to love one another unconditionally.
35 By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
How is your love quotient toward God? Are you loving him with everything you got? Are you mad at him?
