Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy - Lament Pattern - Turn to God, Bring your complaint, Ask Boldly, Choose to Trust
Choices - Ann Forbes - don’t determine who we are solely
Big Idea: Lamenting over God’s chastisement keeps our focus on God’s grace rather than our disrupted plans.
Punishment vs discipline

Using the silent treatment won’t work with God (v 1-3)

Silent before the wicked - to not join in on them mocking God
to not join in sinning by blaming God
Trying to bottle everything up won’t work
Trying to not sin is not enough
Kids

Crying out to God to gain perspective helps (v4-6)

There’s not much time and life is a mystery that you don’t know what will come to pass
,
Where are they now...

Hoping in God’s grace while being rebuked is faith. (v 7-13)

Hoping in deliverance from shame
Hoping in deliverance from hope in other things besides God
Hoping in
Joy comes from God not the fulfillment of my plans and desires
By God realizing you are a guest and not chastising you any more
1 Chron 29:14-16
1 Chronicles 29:14–16 ESV
14 “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. 15 For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding. 16 O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own.
Hebrews 11:13–16 ESV
13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
Hebrews 12:22–24 ESV
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
Hebrews 12:
My next step today is...
Lament when appropriate
Seek God’s grace as the source of your joy
The Woods are taking a month of vacation after a very hectic and trying summer with 2 jobs and then trash pickup this fall.  We appreciate their desire to seek to bless our church and their strong love for spreading the Gospel in our community. After the month, he will be resigning and they will be seeking God's direction for what's next for them. We're planning on giving them a gift for their many years of service and dedication on October 27th.  Please be in prayer for the Woods during this time.
