Jesus revealed the source of sin, the seriousness of sin and the solution for sin.
Nip it in the bud.

The Source of Sin

Sin always begins in the heart. The root of the problem is not just the acts, but our sin nature.
An unbeliever is controlled by their sin nature.
A believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, but we will face the battle against indwelling sin all our life.
Jesus does not give us “wiggle room” to make light of our problem, he is demonstrating the relationship between the 7th commandment and the 10th commandment.
Exodus 20:14 ESV
“You shall not commit adultery.
Ex 20:
Exo 20:
Exodus 20:17 ESV
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

The Seriousness of Sin

Sin is serious. Its consequences are a mater of life and death.
Brandon - Age 31 strangled to death by his own Burmese Python
Sin perverts and destroys all that it touches - like blight on a tomato plant.
Jesus gives the extreme example of cutting off a hand, or gouging out an eye to emphasize how dangerously gruesome sin is.
We need to learn to see sin from Christ’s perspective, rather than make light of it.
We have become so dull that we do not even realize how much our separation from God by sin has distorted His design and blessing in our life.
We must come to a place of understanding what our sin cost the Lord Jesus. Then we will grow to hate it.
“He does not truly hate the fruit who delights in the root.” - John Owen

The Solution for Sin

Salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.
Agree with God about our condition and confess.
1 John 1:7–9 ESV
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Receive Christ’s cleaning from sin by faith.
Sanctification by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:10–13 ESV
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Put sin to death. Cut it off at the root!
Colossians 3:5–10 ESV
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
