You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
The cleansing power of the WORD Jesus has spoken to His disciples, then is equivalent to the life of the life of the vine pulsating through the ages.
The LOGOS has already taken root in the life of the believers.
Refer back to :
Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
The disciples have already been rendered clean because of the WORD spoken to them.
The Father has cleansed/pruned them through the WORD Jesus has spoken.
We must receive, respond and react to the WORD of the Lord. Every time we hear the WORD of the Lord, we should allow it somehow to purify us, to cleanse us.
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
Remain is from the word MENO. It means to stay, to lodge with. It can also mean a dwelling, a stay. One of the slang expressions heard over years is “Where do you stay?” If we are REMAINING in Jesus, we are not only allowing Him to live with us,but we are living in HIM.
Notice the word the KJV uses: ABIDE.
Remember that Hymn ABIDE WITH ME? It was written by Henry F. Lye.
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens, Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, oh abide with me
I need Thy presence every passing hour
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine Lord abide with me
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where’s death’s sting? Where, grave thy victory?
I triumph still if Thou abide with me.
Hold thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Heaven's morning breaks and earth's vain shadows flee
In life, in death oh Lord abide with me
How are you abiding/remaining in Him? The promise is that if we go to Him and remain in Him, He remains in us!
Being in Him and Him being in us, reveals to us the idea of ONENESS with Christ. There is something beautiful about being one with Christ.
So the question remains: “How do we remain in Him?”
TIME
Consistently in the WORD of God
Constantly in prayer
Consciously living for Jesus.
What happens if you do that?
You remain connected to the vine
You put yourself in position to bear fruit
“The knot of the branch abides in the vine, and the sap of the vine abides in the branch, and there is a constant communication between them.” —Matthew Henry
Notice the strong warning: “Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
BEAR means to carry, to bring, to lead, endure and uphold.
Why should we bear fruit?
To Glorify God
To account for our coming judgement
To live life to its fullest
It is the sum of our creation
It is the design of what we are to do
It is the root and spring of all Good
It is part of the abundant life.
Without being connected to the vine, we can do nothing!
It is from the DIVINE power of Christ in which we live, move and have our being.
Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.
2 Corinthians
We depend on Christ no only as the vine for support, but we have to be connected to Him to get the sap from the roots!
If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
I am troubled by this passage. In fact, I have grieved over it.
There is a point made in the Old Testament book of Job:
Job 8:11-13
Can papyrus grow tall where there is no marsh?
Can reeds thrive without water?
While still growing and uncut,
they wither more quickly than grass.
Such is the destiny of all who forget God;
so perishes the hope of the godless.
Remember the fig tree Jesus cursed? What happened?
This passage should make us shudder if we are apart from Christ. And it should make us plead with those we know who are apart from Christ.
Fire is the most applicable place for withered branches for they are no good for anything else.
“Son of man, how is the wood of a vine better than that of a branch on any of the trees in the forest? Is wood ever taken from it to make anything useful? Do they make pegs from it to hang things on? And after it is thrown on the fire as fuel and the fire burns both ends and chars the middle, is it then useful for anything?
1 John 2:18-19
Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
“As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.
Again, to remain in Him and allowing His words to remain in us means what?
Fellowship with Christ
Observing and living by His teachings
In doing so, you and I can ask in prayer whatever we wish: purpose, desire, want.
But it has to be something that remains in Him. There is a condition. You cannot ask for something that is not in Jesus. So what would that be?
Our fellowship with Christ is maintained by the WORD: “Remain in me and I in you.”
Our fellowship is maintained by PRAYER.
Abiding in Christ as one’s heart’s delight shall through Christ have their heart’s desire.
PEACE with prevail!
