2 Samuel 7:18–29 HCSB
Then King David went in, sat in the Lord’s presence, and said, Who am I, Lord God, and what is my house that You have brought me this far? What You have done so far was a little thing to You, Lord God, for You have also spoken about Your servant’s house in the distant future. And this is a revelation for mankind, Lord God. What more can David say to You? You know Your servant, Lord God. Because of Your word and according to Your will, You have revealed all these great things to Your servant. This is why You are great, Lord God. There is no one like You, and there is no God besides You, as all we have heard confirms. And who is like Your people Israel? God came to one nation on earth in order to redeem a people for Himself, to make a name for Himself, and to perform for them great and awesome acts, driving out nations and their gods before Your people You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt. You established Your people Israel to be Your own people forever, and You, Lord, have become their God. Now, Lord God, fulfill the promise forever that You have made to Your servant and his house. Do as You have promised, so that Your name will be exalted forever, when it is said, “The Lord of Hosts is God over Israel.” The house of Your servant David will be established before You since You, Lord of Hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant when You said, “I will build a house for you.” Therefore, Your servant has found the courage to pray this prayer to You. Lord God, You are God; Your words are true, and You have promised this grace to Your servant. Now, please bless Your servant’s house so that it will continue before You forever. For You, Lord God, have spoken, and with Your blessing Your servant’s house will be blessed forever.
2 Samuel

In this passage, David’s prayer teaches us 3 postures of worship in every season:

Praise God in the Present (v.18-21)

In these couple of verses, David shows his gratitude for his position currently.
God has just made a great promise to David regarding the place of his family.
David was able to not only praise God because of His promise, but because God’s Word could be trusted.
John 14:6 HCSB
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Jesus said this about Himself, and by that He was also speaking about the God because of the Trinity.
It is important for us as Christians to praise God in all seasons, but especially when He has brought you through something and promised you the future.
Some of you might be sitting here saying that you have nothing to praise God for: You woke up this morning didn’t you? You can walk can’t you.
You
Some of you aren’t able to praise God in the present because you are too focused on the things that you didn’t get in the past, or that you want to get in the future.
Check this out: David isn’t sitting on the throne because he asked for it, he is sitting on the throne because he earned it.
I am not saying that we have a works based relationship because...
Titus 3:5 HCSB
He saved us — not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
Titus 3:
But I am saying:
Luke 16:10 HCSB
Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much.
Matthew 25:23 HCSB
“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy!’
Matthew
Psalm 99 HCSB
The Lord reigns! Let the peoples tremble. He is enthroned above the cherubim. Let the earth quake. Yahweh is great in Zion; He is exalted above all the peoples. Let them praise Your great and awe-inspiring name. He is holy. The mighty King loves justice. You have established fairness; You have administered justice and righteousness in Jacob. Exalt the Lord our God; bow in worship at His footstool. He is holy. Moses and Aaron were among His priests; Samuel also was among those calling on His name. They called to Yahweh and He answered them. He spoke to them in a pillar of cloud; they kept His decrees and the statutes He gave them. Lord our God, You answered them. You were a forgiving God to them, an avenger of their sinful actions. Exalt the Lord our God; bow in worship at His holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.
David knew what he had been given and the nature of the God that He served:
Psalm 99 HCSB

Thank God for the Past (v.22-24)

David also addressed God for what He had done in David’s past.
Charles Swindoll said it well”
“Because God gave you your makeup and superintended every moment of your past, including all the hardship, pain, and struggles, He wants to use your words in a unique manner. No one else can speak through your vocal cords, and, equally important, no one else has your story.”
I truly believe that the fires of our past have forged our hearts for today.
Also, David is remembering what God has brought them through that has led to the present and will lead to the future.
God had chosen Israel, the kingdom that David ruled over, by giving the law at Mount Sinai and speaking His Word to His prophets. This set Israel a part because the rest of the world served fictional idols and false gods.
Student’s we have a reason to celebrate the past today because without our past, we wouldn’t have a story to tell.
The past may be full of hurt, brokenness, and turmoil, but that is the exact reason to be thankful for it. What I mean by that is without all of the scars that come from our past that God has healed, we wouldn’t have the account of God’s faithfulness in our lives.
Joshua 4:8–9 HCSB
The Israelites did just as Joshua had commanded them. The 12 men took stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each of the Israelite tribes, just as the Lord had told Joshua. They carried them to the camp and set them down there. Joshua also set up 12 stones in the middle of the Jordan where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing. The stones are there to this day.
Our past doesn’t define us by any means, but it does serve as a reminder of what our faithful God has brought us through.

Trust God for the Future (v. 25-29)

This passage ends with David giving thanks to God for His promises.
If you have not figured out already, our God is a God of His Word. Simply put, if He says it, it is.
He as promised to
We see where God ultimately fulfills His promise in this particular situation when Jesus Christ is born and is a direct descendant of David’s linage.
With that being said, David knew that He could trust God with His future because he knew the nature of God, meaning: He knew the tendencies of God. He knew His habits, what His Character was like.
It’s very similar to the nonverbal communication that you have with your best friend. You know the looks that your friend gives. For example:
- Holy Crap
- Yeah right
- No way
- Is this guy serious
The only way that you get to know someone that intimately is by getting to know the extremely well.
By that, we can trust that God wants the best for our future!
Matthew 7:11 HCSB
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
Matthew
