LAST WEEK
LAST WEEK
We looked at Paul’s venture to create more unity between the two communities that were coming together in the name of Jesus
Paul did a great job of referencing old testament truths to bring value to the gentile community
The fact is that people were coming to the Lord, and those who had been close to God throughout history, needed to embrace this fresh work of God.
We also learned that God is the God of Hope
He is able to fill us with Joy & Peace in believing
That we may abound in Hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
THIS WEEK
We will finish
Paul will begin to wrap up this letter
He will make somethings clear to the believers in Rome.
Romans 15:14-
14 Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. 15 Nevertheless, brethren, I have written more boldly to you on some points, as reminding you, because of the grace given to me by God, 16 that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 Therefore I have reason to glory in Christ Jesus in the things which pertain to God. 18 For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not accomplished through me, in word and deed, to make the Gentiles obedient—19 in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. 20 And so I have made it my aim to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build on another man’s foundation, 21 but as it is written:
“To whom He was not announced, they shall see;
And those who have not heard shall understand.”
22 For this reason I also have been much hindered from coming to you. 23 But now no longer having a place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come to you, 24 whenever I journey to Spain, I shall come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, and to be helped on my way there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a while. 25 But now I am going to Jerusalem to minister to the saints. 26 For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem. 27 It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things. 28 Therefore, when I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit, I shall go by way of you to Spain. 29 But I know that when I come to you, I shall come in the fullness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.
30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, 31 that I may be delivered from those in Judea who do not believe, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32 that I may come to you with joy by the will of God, and may be refreshed together with you. 33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
PRAY
14 Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. 15 Nevertheless, brethren, I have written more boldly to you on some points, as reminding you, because of the grace given to me by God, 16 that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:14-
PAUL WAS EXCITED AND ENCOURAGED IN REGARDS TO WHAT GOD WAS DOING IN ROME
NOT ONLY WHERE THEY BIBLICALLY SOUND
THEY WERE ALLOWING GOD’S SPIRIT TO MOVE IN THEIR MIDST
THEY WERE PROACTIVELY YIELDING TO THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT
BECAUSE THE SPIRIT WAS MOVING POWERFULLY
They were able to admonish one another
Instructing each other
Rebuking each other
Correcting each other
SET THEIR MINDS RIGHT
How was Paul able to do this?
Paul gives the key to this authority
They were filled with goodness
And filled with knowledge
When we teach and instruct from the right posture
We will only aid what the Spirit has been trying to accomplish in someone else’s life.
FROM THE POSTURE OF HUMILITY, GOODNESS, AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE GOSPEL
PAUL WRITES TO THEM ABOUT THE THINGS THAT NEEDED THEIR ATTENTION
Paul’s heart behind correction was from the position of Overseer
The reason he was correcting them was to cultivate growth
The reason he was instructing them was to take them deeper
To encourage a Flourishing Walk with Jesus
That their offering to the Lord would be acceptable in the sight of God
Sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Friends, the way we correct our children
The way we instruct our family members
The way we admonish one another here in church
Should always be from a place of humility
It
We must always know the “Why”
We must always know the “Reason behind our correction”
It can’t just be “Because it’s wrong”
It can’t just be “Because it is sin”
It definitely can’t be because you want to prove that you are right.
It must be deeper than that
You want to know what bad discipline looks like?

Throughout the Letter to the Romans, Paul has done a great job of exposing some areas of opportunity.
He did it from a place of humility
He did it with good intentions
When those two things are the posture from which you correct, boldness will be accepted and not rejected.
“To whom He was not announced, they shall see;
And those who have not heard shall understand.”
PAUL, BEING FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT, WAS ABLE TO CORRECTLY POUR INTO THE ROMAN CHURCH
HE HAD REASON TO GLORY IN WHAT CHRIST WAS DOING THROUGH HIM
17 So I have reason to be enthusiastic about all Christ Jesus has done through me in my service to God.
HE HAD REASON TO GLORY IN CHRIST IN THE WORK THAT HE HAD PUT IN
PAUL HAD BEEN IN MINISTRY FOR AT LEAST 17 YEARS
PAUL HAD STUDIED THE SCRIPTURES FOR AT LEAST 30 YEARS
THEREFORE WE CAN CONFIDENTLY SAY, THAT HE WAS VERY WELL VERSED IN THE SCRIPTURES
HIS RESUME INCLUDED AND WAS NOT LIMITED TO:
25 Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; 26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 27 in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness—28 besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches.
25 Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep;
YOU COULD SAY, PAUL HAD EXPERIENCED A LOT
YET HE MAINTAINED A HUMBLE POSTURE
WHEN HE DISCIPLED PEOPLE, HE STUCK TO ONE RULE:
18 For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not accomplished through me, in word and deed, to make the Gentiles obedient—
ROMANS 15:18
AS HE SOUGHT TO POUR INTO THE GENTILE COMMUNITY
HE WAS NOT GOING TO SPEAK TO THINGS HE HAD NOT PERSONALLY EXPERIENCED
HE WAS NOT GOING TO SPEAK TO THINGS THAT HE HAD NOT LIVED OUT PERSONALLY
HE WASN’T GOING TO FORCE AN ISSUE BECAUSE OF HIS POSITION IN THE CHURCH
HE WASN’T GOING TO FORCE HIS OPINION JUST TO HAVE HIS WAY AMONG THE GENTILES.
PAUL KNEW SOMETHING THAT A LOT OF CHRISTIANS TODAY, STILL HAVEN’T GRASPED
GOD KNOWS WAY MORE THAN WE KNOW
HE KNOWS HOW TO BUILD HIS CHURCH
HE KNEW HOW TO REACH THE GENTILES
HE DID IT THROUGH SIGNS AND WONDERS BY THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST WHICH IS ABLE TO SAVE
BECAUSE PAUL WAS IN TUNE WITH WHAT GOD WANTED TO DO
HE WAS ABLE TO BE USED BY GOD
HE WAS ABLE TO GO WHERE NO ONW ELSE HAD GONE
MAKING IT HIS AIM TO PREACH THE WORD OF GOD WHERE JESUS HAD NOT BEEN PREACHED.
PAUL KNEW THAT THERE WERE PEOPLE WHO HAD NOT YET HEARD THE GOSPEL
“TO THOSE WHOM HE WAS NOT ANNOUNCED TO”
PAUL KNEW THEY WOULD SEE
“THOSE WHO HAD NOT HEARD . . . SHALL UNDERSTAND”
PAUL BASED HIS WHOLE MINISTRY AROUND WHAT GOD HAD PREVIOUSLY SAID ABOUT PEOPLE
HE MADE IT HIS AIM TO SEE THE WORD OF GOD FULFILLED IN HIS TIMELINE
HE WANTED GOD’S WORD TO BE ALIVE AND WELL IN HIS WALK WITH JESUS
FOR PAUL, THIS WASN’T EASY
IT TOOK WORK
IT MEANT THAT HE HAD TO LABOR
22 For this reason I also have been much hindered from coming to you. 23 But now no longer having a place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come to you, 24 whenever I journey to Spain, I shall come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, and to be helped on my way there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a while.
ROMANS 15:22
PAUL’S MINISTRY TO THE ROMANS CAME AT A COST
HE DESIRED TO BE AMONG THEM, BUT HE HAD BEEN HINDERED
NOW, HAVING COMPLETED HIS MISSION IN THE EASTERN ROMAN EMPIRE, PAUL WAS READY TO HEAD WEST TO THE IBERIAN PENINSULA
WHY?
BECAUSE OF THE WORD OF GOD
BECAUSE HE WANTED TO SEE IT COME ALIVE
19 I will set a sign among them; and those among them who escape I will send to the nations: to Tarshish and Pul and Lud, who draw the bow, and Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands afar off who have not heard My fame nor seen My glory. And they shall declare My glory among the Gentiles. 20 Then they shall bring all your brethren for an offering to the Lord out of all nations, on horses and in chariots and in litters, on mules and on camels, to My holy mountain Jerusalem,” says the Lord, “as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the Lord.
THIS IS WHAT DROVE PAUL TO FULLFILL HIS MINISTRY
“IF GOD SAID IT, LET’S SEE IT COME TO PASS”
IT IS JUST LIKE US TODAY, OR IS IT?
ARE WE LOOKING TO SEE GOD’S WORD COME TO PASS?
ARE
ARE WE LONGING TO SEE WHAT EXCEEDINGLY ABUNDANTLY ABOVE ALL THAT WE CAN ASK OR THINK ACTUALLY MEANS?
ARE WE LOOKING TO LIVE A BORING LIFE? OR DESIRING TO FIND OUT WHAT LIFE MORE ABUNDANT MEANS?
25 But now I am going to Jerusalem to minister to the saints. 26 For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem. 27 It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things. 28 Therefore, when I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit, I shall go by way of you to Spain. 29 But I know that when I come to you, I shall come in the fullness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.
BEFORE PAUL WENT TO ROME, HE NEEDED TO GO TO JERUSALEM
WHY?
BECAUSE THE WORD OF GOD WAS DOING ITS THING AMONG THE GENTILES
THOSE IN MACEDONIA AND ACHAIA WERE CONTRIBUTING FINANCIALLY TO THE MISSION OF GOD
KIND OF LIKE WE ARE DOING
WE SEE A NEED, AND WE GO FOR IT
PAUL SAYS “IT PLEASED THOSE IN THESE AREAS TO MAKE A CONTRIBUTION”
IMAGINE GROWING UP ALL OF YOUR LIFE
BEING TAUGHT TO HATE GENTILES
BEING TAUGHT THAT THEY WERE THE SCUM OF THE EARTH
ONE DAY, THE GOSPEL REACHES THEM, THE WAY IT REACHED YOU
The people whom you once despised were moved by God to minister to you financially
How humbling
This was important to Paul
This took precedence
Why?
Because it would serve as an example to the greater body of Christ.
Romans 15:30-
30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, 31 that I may be delivered from those in Judea who do not believe, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32 that I may come to you with joy by the will of God, and may be refreshed together with you. 33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
