43 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.
44 His betrayer had given them a signal. “The one I kiss,” he said, “he’s the one; arrest him and take him away under guard.”
45 So when he came, immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.
46 They took hold of him and arrested him.
47 One of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his ear.
48 Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a criminal, to capture me?
49 Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
50 Then they all deserted him and ran away.
51 Now a certain young man, wearing nothing but a linen cloth, was following him. They caught hold of him,
52 but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.

Illus: Just imagine with me that Coach Oreeron got a copy of Nick Saban’s play book. Now imagine with me that not only did he get the play book, but he got the detailed game plan for the LSU vs. Alabama game. Take one more step with me. Imagine if Coach O got a live feed of the play calls as they were being made.
You are God, incarnate, creater and king of this earth.
You know that your death is iminiate.
Coach Orgeron would be able to plan from the outset how to defeat the Crimson tide.
You know that Judas has, and is betraying you.
He would be able to scheme and devise ways to defeat Nick Saban.
He would be able to react quickly on game day with real time knowledge of how to defeat the University of Alabama.
Because he go advanced knowledge, he would be able to plan ahead ways to keep the tigers from losing.
Jesus had all of that advanced knowledge coming into the Garden of Gethsemane. He knew the playbook, knew the game plan, and and also knew the play by play of what was coming.
Yet… because the only way to save us was through loss, he willing walked into the trap set for him.
You have wrestled with the coming pain so much so that you have asked for God to remove the pain.
Forgive me for my bluntness, but wouldn’t you want to punch Judas in the eye when he walks up. Wouldn’t you want to call down the army of angels to consume him.
Jesus showed both who he was, and what he came to do by his reaction. Where we would fight back, Jesus embraced the pain for God’s great purposes.
20 When evening came, he was reclining at the table with the Twelve.
21 While they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”
22 Deeply distressed, each one began to say to him, “Surely not I, Lord?”
23 He replied, “The one who dipped his hand with me in the bowl—he will betray me.
24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born.”
25 Judas, his betrayer, replied, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” “You have said it,” he told him.

Illus: Put yourself in Jesus’ shoes here in this passage.
You are God, incarnate, creater and king of this earth.
You know that your death is iminiate.
You know that Judas has, and is betraying you.
You have wrestled with the coming pain so much so that you have asked for God to remove the pain.

27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will fall away, because it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”
29 Peter told him, “Even if everyone falls away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”
31 But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with you, I will never deny you.” And they all said the same thing.
Mk 14:27-

Illus: There is no word that describes our time quite as well as culture war.
It is a war.
You have two ideologically polar sides vying for control of the way people, think, act and live.
Neither will be satisfied till all bow to their way of viewing the world.
It seems that who ever screams the loudest, shames the mosts, votes the best will be control the country.
Don’t miss that this way of approaching our fellow man is the way of the world.
Judas, the pharisees, and all those around thought they could control Jesus by using the world’s ways.
Isn’t it funny that the church flourishes when persecution arises. Just as Jesus embraced the suffering for the good of men… so the church when it walks through suffering bring the gospel to light.
25 Jesus called them over and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them.
26 It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
27 and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave;
28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
24 When the ten disciples heard this, they became indignant with the two brothers.
25 Jesus called them over and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them.

27 and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave;
28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
23 He told them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right and left is not mine to give; instead, it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”

Mt 20:
B. As believers we often see the world’s means as a way to God’s way.

Illus: On many occasions I have expressed that we do not need to lower ourselves to the worlds ways to accomplish God’s work.
Look at the distinct ways both peter and Jesus reacted to the mob.
Peter got out a sword, and Jesus gave his life.
How do we react to a world where death reigns and foolishness abounds. Do we react as peter does, or as Jesus does?
Follow me… it makes no sense to lay down and die when being attacked. It makes no sense love enemies. It makes no sense not to throw the second punch.
Every ounce of us desires to fight back for God.
But that is not what God asks, nor expects from us.
He expect us to follow him to the cross, endure suffering, and love the ungovernable.
25 Jesus called them over and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them.

38 “You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
39 But I tell you, don’t resist an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
40 As for the one who wants to sue you and take away your shirt, let him have your coat as well.
41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two.
42 Give to the one who asks you, and don’t turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
43 “You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

III. There is only one who is faithful.
III. There is only one who is faithful.

50 Then they all deserted him and ran away.
A. We hold to Christ because he is faithful where we are faithless.
A. We hold to Christ because he is faithful where we are faithless.
Illus: We will all fail. That does not lower Christ’s standard, but we will. We will fail.
Our hope in eternity, as with today is not in our ability to be faithful, but in Christ’s.
2 tim 2:
8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead and descended from David, according to my gospel,
9 for which I suffer to the point of being bound like a criminal. But the word of God is not bound.
10 This is why I endure all things for the elect: so that they also may obtain salvation, which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
11 This saying is trustworthy: For if we died with him, we will also live with him;
12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us;
13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.
