In the Belly of a Fish: Far From God

Recognized as a potential terminal illness.

In the Belly of a Fish

Jonah 2:1–10 ESV
Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying, “I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice. For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves and your billows passed over me. Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight; yet I shall again look upon your holy temple.’ The waters closed in over me to take my life; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped about my head at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever; yet you brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God. When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love. But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the Lord!” And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.
Jonah

Jonah given a mission - go confront some bad people. Ran away from the presence of the Lord.
Jonah was alone, anxious, distressed, depressed.
Throw me overboard.
Deep trouble
Deep trouble
Sheol hades, the grave; a place under the earth where the dead reside; the realm of death
This is where people go when they die
God, you threw me into a watery grave; I’ve been thrown away, thrown out, you divorced me.
Water closing in around his throat- metaphor for disorder that is choking his soul, personality; can’t breathe
can’t breathe
Throat/neck/life/breath - soul, personality
Sank to the bottom and the gates were slamming shut behind me
I am far from God; far from love, peace, etc.
My life is slipping away.

Jonah’s Distress

Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” moodFeelings of hopelessness, or pessimismIrritabilityFeelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessnessLoss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activitiesDecreased energy or fatigueMoving or talking more slowlyFeeling restless or having trouble sitting stillDifficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisionsDifficulty sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleepingAppetite and/or weight changesThoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attemptsAches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems without a clear physical cause and/or that do not ease even with treatment
It isn't being destroyed in death that Jonah fears but rather the possibility of being abandoned in Sheol and separated from God forever.

Mercy

Found in the belly of the fish. The fish's function - means of grace and mercy; the means by which he is delivered from death by drowning.
Distress, depressed, feeling alone and as though everything is caving in on him and he was far from God, Jonah found mercy in the belly of a fish where he reached out to God.
7 - When my life was overwhelmed, growing faint, wasting away, I remembered you, what you have done.
On the brink of his breath leaving him, his life/soul - mental state
hope going, his thoughts turn to God
- in my distress I called upon the Lord...
You heard my "sound, noise, crackling breaking through.
Common theme in the Psalms

The Road to Life

Being brought out of the place where the dead live
Downward spiral was reversed…when he could sink no lower, God raised him up
hope going, his thoughts turn to God
Being thrown up on the shore - restoration isn’t always pretty.

[SLIDE 7] For Those of Us Who Struggle

Look for and be open for mercy in unlikely places

Deliverance may not look pretty
You will be different

For the Church

Our responsibility to be hope givers.
Bees - the swarm makes the queen
Our responsibility to be hope givers.
Swarm - The church is tasked with caring for the whole person of every person God gives us - body, mind, and soul - and that means we must recognize and care for a person with an illness.
The church can speak into the soul and personhood of the individual in ways that medical professionals cannot.

More Than words

Why do Asian and Hispanic/Latino people in the US have the lowest incidents of Mental Illness? They live in community and/or, its underreported.
Each person is seen, known
Emotional Intelligence - sensitivity that the person we see, meet, etc is our first priority; their experience, feelings, hurts, etc. How we talk to them, welcome them into the sphere of our lives, and equally, enter into theirs…all of it.
