Introduction
In the beginning God created man, even getting His hands “dirty” (Genesis 2:7).
Man marred this perfect existence through sin (Genesis 3).
But the corruption did not stop with Adam and Eve.
Each person in each generation has continued to sin (Romans 3:10, 23).
As we saw last week, being created in the image of God necessitates repentance and obedience to God (Acts 17:22-31).
When one responds to God in obedience, he is born again!
I.
A New Life
From death to life by the grace of God in Christ (Ephesians 2:1, 4-5, 8).
From death to life by the cross of Christ (Galatians 6:14-15).
From death to life by water and the spirit (John 3:3).
—Water = Romans 6:3-4 with Acts 2:38 and Revelation 1:5
—Spirit = 1 Peter 1:23, The Teaching of the Spirit.
Obedience to the Gospel call brings a new life in Christ.
II.
A New Lifestyle
Our new life is rooted in the image of our God and Savior.
—Colossians 3:10-11, “According to image…Christ is all in all.”
—Ephesians 4:24, “Created according to God.”
—2 Corinthians 5:14-15.
—We are being changed into Him!
Our new life is rooted in the knowledge and wisdom of God.
—Colossians 3:10, “Renewed in knowledge.”
—Ephesians 4:20-24, “Learned…heard…taught…truth…renewed in spirit of your mind.”
—Titus 2:11-14, “Teaching us.”
Our new life is rooted in the righteousness and holiness of God.
—Ephesians 4:24, Righteousness and holiness.
—What does that look like?
Stop following after deceitful lusts and walk in the ways of God (Ephesians 4:22, 25-32; Colossians 3:1-17; Galatians 5:16-26).
--There is a constant theme of the denial of self and the embracing of God’s will and love.
Conclusion
We are all created in the image of God but those who have obeyed the Gospel have a new beginning in Christ.
We have a new life and that should bring a new lifestyle rooted in the knowledge, image, and righteousness of God.
So how do we know if we are changed?
—Do you look more like Christ today than yesterday?
—Do you hunger and thirst for the knowledge of God through study and time with the Word?
—Are your pursuits reflecting God’s passions or yours?
Read the texts of Colossians 3, Ephesians 4, and Galatians 5. Does your life look like the new or the old man?
