The Shepard
A psalm of David. 1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
4 Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I’m not afraid when you walk at my side. Your trusty shepherd’s crook makes me feel secure. 5 You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies. You revive my drooping head; my cup brims with blessing. 6 Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. I’m back home in the house of God for the rest of my life.
It is a Valley- A valley suggests being hedged in and surrounded.
It’s not our destination or dwelling place.
We walk through the valley!
7 The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;
His presence dissipates fear.
8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
It is the Shepard’s business to support, correct and protect.
12 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
I am never in lack.
3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.

6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
We can live in the faithful expectation of mercy and goodness.
7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
We are in covenant relationship with the Father.
1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.
7 Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours. 8 “For I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery and wrongdoing. In my faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them.
