His Divine Pedigree
His Divine Pedigree
9 Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin”?
No man can say he is pure in God’s sight, yet Jesus was no ordinary man! The scriptures teach that he was God! Jesus was by right and by nature God!
Hebrews Chapter 1 (Jesus)
Jesus
Is the Son of God who is the heir of all things and the originator of all things. Vs. 2
Is the radiance of God’s glory and is the exact imprint of his nature Vs. 3
Holds the universe together by the “word of his power” vs. 3
Is higher than all intelligent creatures. Vs. 4
He is worshipped and called God. Vs. 6,8
So as God, he was without sin, just and upright, he was perfect in every way!
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 4:
Yet he was not only God, he was a man!
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
God made a miracle and took on human form! As God he had the power to to do what no other man could do, conquer death, and as man he could do what God could not, die!
So Jesus was fully God and fully man, the God-man!
His Satisfying Death
His Satisfying Death
-
We noted last time two things: that all men have sinned and have incurred a debt before God. Secondly, that they are unable to do anything to rectify the situation.
Illustration: If we speak of salvation in terms of money, you don’t have heaven’s currency! You and I are beggars, we are helpless!
25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” 26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
God Pardons Men Freely!
God Pardons Men Freely!
vs. 24
justified- to declare just or innocent (not guilty)
grace- loving kindness, favor
redemption- ransom, or payment.
So we are declared to be just or innocent as an act of God’s loving kindness through the payment of Jesus’ death.
What an amazing gift! An “unspeakable gift!”
There are only 2 ways to be right before God! Earn it by being absolutely perfect in every way! Or receive it as a gift, a handout! You can either humble yourself and receive a handout from Christ, or you can stand before God and be judged on your own merit!
Only Jesus Satisfies God’s Standard
Only Jesus Satisfies God’s Standard
vs.25
propitiation- a means of appeasing or expiating (renders one favorable)
forbearance- toleration
So the question is, how can God be just and just pardon anyone? Is this not a travesty against justice!
6 The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah
142 Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true.
Jesus’ death on the cross appeased God’s just wrath for you, and satisfied the demands of justice! He did through his life and death, what you could never do! Meet the demands of a Holy God!
22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
When he died, he carried the punishment of your sins on the cross and through his death the righteous demands of God are met!
Now God’s righteousness is declared and vindicating his graciousness~ vs. 25
31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
So Jesus vindicates God’s righteousness and his mercy!
Christian Unity: An Exposition of Ephesians 4:1–16 Chapter 9: One Faith
Jesus, Thy robe of righteousness
My beauty is, my glorious dress:
’Midst flaming worlds, in this arrayed
With joy shall I lift up my head.
Bold shall I stand in Thy great day,
For who aught to my charge shall lay?
Fully through Thee absolved I am
From sin and fear, from guilt and shame.
Jesus, be endless praise to Thee,
Whose boundless mercy hath for me —
For me—a full atonement made,
An everlasting ransom paid.
God justifies those who believe in him! vs. 26
God justifies those who believe in him! vs. 26
It’s not by my doing that I’m declared righteous, but by his! I am counted righteous because I look to him as my only righteousness!
Right now you stand before God only on the basis of yourself and your actions. If you would recognize that your good deeds are worthless and turn you heart to trust only in Jesus and his work, God will declare you righteous!
His Kind Disposition
His Kind Disposition
34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
Read the Gospels, read the accounts of Jesus on earth, and what do you find? Jesus is a friend of sinners? Are you a sinner? Do you count yourself as God counts you? Sinful, guilty, and helpless? If so, then Jesus is a friend for people like you!
18 Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.
God is kind, is gracious, and he will forgive you! He will pardon you and declare you not guilty. He will remove the stain of your sins completely!
But you must come to him! You must own what you are, a beggar, helpless! You must put yourself at his mercy and say, “Lord, I cannot save myself, you must save me!” “I desire to have Christ as my savior, and Lord I submit myself to him!”
God justifies the one who has faith in Jesus!
