Revelation 19:6-
Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
You have all been invited here today to celebrate the union of Brian and Kelsey in the God ordained institution of marriage. We are here to witness them commit their lives to one another as husband and wife. There will be a beautiful ceremony , Kelsey will be adorned in beautiful dress, and there will be a celebration meal afterward. All of you have the privilege of attending this great celebration.
However, I want all of us to understand marriages here on earth are just pictures of a greater marriage. Our earthly marriages are pointing to a more permanent eternal marriage. A marriage between Christ and His Church, His bride. And like today only those who are invited and accept the Gospel invitation to be united to Christ will experience the consummation of this eternal marriage when the Bridegroom returns to gather His bride!
Listen to what the apostle John writes in,
Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah!
There is coming a day when the Lord our God, the Almighty who is currently seated on His throne will return to this earth to retrieve His bride, His Church. On that day there will be a celebration in heaven, called the marriage supper of the Lamb. John doesn’t describe the details of the Supper but he does tell us at least three truths about the event.
The bride (the church) will be made ready, she will be granted a beautiful robe, made of white fine linen, bright and pure.
She will be washed clean of all of her sins, she will be stained by sin no more. The blood of Christ, the washing of the word, and the sanctification of the Spirit will make her spotless and without blemish! As John writes in his epistle, we will be made like Him!
2. This marriage supper is by invitation only. The Angel said, “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” No one will come who had not recieved the universal call of the gospel nor the divine call of God to salvation.
It is Brian and Kelsey’s desire that all of their guest would receive the gospel call at their wedding so that by God’s mercy and grace He may effectually call men and women to salvation.
Therefore, I am here today to present the good news of Jesus Christ. If we are honest with ourselves we don’t have to look very deeply to see that we are all sinners, we are all law breakers and have transgressed the command of God the creator of heaven and earth.
Because of our sin we have all earned the wage for our sin which is death. But we cannot pay the debt we owe because we are spiritually dead and unable to offer the sacrifice needed.
Thankfully, all hope is not lost, the apostle Paul tells us that although the wage of sin is death, the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. He demonstrated His own love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Following his death, Christ miraculously rose from the grave proving that He was both the Son of Man and Son of God and providing the way for you and I to be saved.
Paul goes on to say,
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
All those who call out on the Lord for salvation, who believe in Jesus Christ will be saved! This brings us to our final truth from Revelation,
3. The marriage supper of the Lamb will be a time of unadulterated worship of the Lamb. We will see Jesus as we never have before, personally, bodily, and without sin stained eyes. Instead of being crushed under the wrath of God all who repent and believe will be enabled to Worship the one true God!
If you have never repented of your sins and trusted in Christ alone for salvation, would you call out on Him today? You will leave the marriage of Brian and Kelsey knowing that you will be Blessed at future Marriage Supper of the Lamb!
