Three Announcements
The prophet Elijah: John the Baptist
malachi prophesied this
mal 4 4-
Remember the Law.
Why would God tell them to do this?
The Feasts provided pictures of God’s promises.
Keep a finger in Malachi…but let’s look at and following
back to malachi
deuteronomy 18 15-
mal 4 5-6
God is promising to send the prophet Elijah
Gabriel tells Zechariah that his son will go in the spirit of Elijah before the Lord to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
Read what Gabriel tells Zechariah one more time:
luke 1
but why does God say that He is going to do this before the great and terrible day of the Lord?
To answer this…let’s look at the second announcement!
The virgin birth
The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son.
luke 1 26-
His name will be Jesus.
He will be called the Son of God.
He will be the one promised to David.
His kingdom will have no end.
The virgin birth was to be a sign for Judah (why this announcement is coming before the great and terrible day of the Lord).
to refresh your memory...

Isaiah continues to unpack this sign: The son born to a virgin will be the king God promised to David:
This child would be a stumbling stone to Israel:
is 9 6-7
God will destroy His people, but save a remnant:
is 10 20-
The reason Malachi said that God would send a forerunner before the great and terrible day of the Lord: The sign of the virgin birth was a sign given to Judah from God to pronounce judgment on them.
He would cut them off but save a remnant.
John’s message was: Repent, the kingdom of God is at hand.
This was also Jesus’ message.
Jesus said that He was only sent to the lost sheep of Israel () because his death on the cross at the hand of the Jews would cut them off from the covenant God called them to at Sinai.
Jesus would be the stone they stumbled over.
Jesus would establish a new covenant through which He would call a people of faith to follow Him.
The seed of the woman: Joseph
matt 1
God sent Gabriel to Joseph to protect Mary.
But also to remind His people of the promise He made to Eve…The Promised One would come from the seed of the woman.
