Double shot at Midnight

Has anyone had double shot?
College story time—nothing like a good college story
College story centered around this
I was in college—dorm room—finishing up work
Felt tired looked at the time—about 10—laid down
Almost asleep—phone went off
Reminder about paper due tomorrow
Went off at 11 PM—meant to set it for 11 AM
I wanted to get paper done mid day—not midnight
I try to wake myself up—go to mini fridge
Had double shot espresso—pulled it out
Set it to the side
Began typing paper—worked for about an hour
After hour—took short break—saw double shot
It’s about 12AM at this point
Drink the double shot to finish the paper
Thought, “I took it out—should probably drink it.”
Didn’t think it through—almost done with paper—did not need that much caffeine
Finished paper—laid down—did not fall asleep till about 4
Alarm clock when off at 7
“Perfect” night of sleep turned into barley 3 hrs of sleep
All this b/c I didn’t think it through

I didn’t think it through

Thank you for being here—swipe right weekend
Please keep phone usage to a minimum
* Go over schedule for the weekend*
We are calling it swipe right for 2 main reasons
1. Swipe Right book
2. Talk about relationships/dating b/c we want you to “swipe right”
Dating apps/sites have taken over the relationship scene (about 8,000)
When you like someone—swipe right
We’re not asking you to swipe right in a dating app
I desire for you pursue—wait—swipe relationships in the right way
This weekend hear from 2 guest—Amanda and Jordan
All discussion will be centered around swipe right theme
For this discussion—concentrate on phrase “I didn’t think it through”
Has there ever been something you did—didn’t think it through?
I did not think it through—double shot = no sleep
Humans have a problem thinking things through
Reason: Now screams really loud
I need energy NOW—need to be in relationship now—we need to date now—need to cuddle now—need to kiss, hold hands now
Now screams really loud, but later screams longer
Need relationship now—get in relationship—goes good for little while
Break up—uncomfortable—gets ugly—baggage and pain
Did not think things through

Train today for tomorrow

One of my favorite quotes out of book—from chapter 0
“Train today for the relationship you want tomorrow.”
Is it bad to want to be in a relationship?
No—humans desire attention and intimacy—how God created us
We want to think this through—do this cortically
Have better relationships by training today for our future relationship
One way we do this = watch over your heart
Didn’t see that coming!
This is how we train today for the relationship we want later
What does “watch over your heart” mean?
(MSG), Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.
Keep vigilant watch over your heart;
“Heart” is not referring to physical organ—mind
First we have to understand what’s in our mind is where are life starts
that’s where life starts.
Every heard “mind in the gutter?”—that’s where their mind really is
Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth;
avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip.
Which is why we watch what we consume
Images, magazines, books, videos—if we put garbage in, garbage out
Keep your eyes straight ahead;
ignore all sideshow distractions.
Consuming double shot will lead to a sleepless night
Watch your step,
For a lot of us—when it comes to relationships—the problem is not what we’re doing it’s what we’re consuming
You read Bible, come to retreat, attend youth
and the road will stretch out smooth before you.
Look neither right nor left;
What often times messes with our relationships is the images or videos we view and in the friends we have
It can even be the company we keep that fills our head with bad relational direction
Especially if videos and images are sexual in nature
We have to watch what’s getting in our mind
leave evil in the dust.
We have to watch over our hearts—pay attention to what we consume
Peterson, E. H. (2005). The Message: the Bible in contemporary language (). Colorado Springs, CO: NavPress.
Then this verse give us things to avoid—things that cloud our heart:
Lies, gossip, tearing down people with words
At the end of this verse it says, “keep your eyes straight ahead”

Straight ahead

“Eyes are the windows to the soul”
Have you heard expression? What does it mean?
Jesus warns us about this
Jesus says that it is our eyes that cause us to sin
This is some advice my man David could have used
Who has heard of David and Bathsheba ?
How has heard of David and Bathsheba? How does their story go?
David and Bathsheba

Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath.

(NLT), “Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath.”
I want to be clear about something:
Tyndale House Publishers. (2015). Holy Bible: New Living Translation (). Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House Publishers.
Seeing Bathsheba was a mistake, not a sin
The sin started when David didn’t stop looking
He didn’t do anything wrong until his eyes started turning towards B.
If he would have kept his eyes straight—
David—on this account failed in watching over his heart
Let’s look at Jesus—the devil tempting Jesus
Get his eyes looking somewhere else other than God
(NLT), Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. “I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please. I will give it all to you if you will worship me.” Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”
5 Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 “I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please. 7 I will give it all to you if you will worship me.”
8 Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say,
‘You must worship the Lord your God
What did Jesus do? He looked to God
David did not keep his eyes fixed on God—Jesus did—very diff. results
and serve only him.’”
Before, during, and after any relationship we may get in—this is where are eyes need to be
Tyndale House Publishers. (2015). Holy Bible: New Living Translation (). Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House Publishers.
If they are not—we will find that we’re not thinking as clearly as we once believed
Maybe we acted to fast—not as ready as we thought
Since our goal is to train ourselves today for the relationship we want tomorrow:
We have to watch where are eyes are looking and what we’re consuming
1 more story then done!
We protect ourselves by weighing the cost of our decisions

Free Vending Machines

Grandfather has this quote—ani’t nothing free
Every time we would go out to buy something—he would say that
If you ever get the chance to go or even to work for FB—they have free vending machines
The
FB example
From pop tart to the big honey buns—its all free
This is how we fight the temptations to move to fast into a relationship or look at things we shouldn’t
Instead of labels in machine telling you how much money it needs—it tells you the true cost of eating those items
For example: Snickers bar—25 min bike ride
That’s what it would cost to work it off
Which is a great reminder—nothing in life is free
Good relationships are not free—they take work, time, patients, effort, trust
Before we get into a good relationship—focus on ourselves first
Remember what I said at beginning: train today for the relationship you want tomorrow
Concern yourself with your spirituality—soul—mind—heart
You have so much freedom and dating, serious relationships, for many of you, can wait
Why? B/c I want you to be the best you you can be for your second half that is out there
Train yourself today for the relationship you want tomorrow—its all about us
This first session is all about where you are
Break into prayer groups—ask for prayer request--”I” prayer request
