The Sacredness of Marriage
The Sacredness of Marriage
The OT Law instituted protections for a woman whose husband was displeased with her.
“When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, and if she goes and becomes another man’s wife, and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
Jesus clarified that adultery was the only sin that could violate the marriage covenant.
Later in Matthew Jesus emphasized God’s original intent in marriage.
God is the author of marriage, it is His good design. His intent is for the marriage of a man and a woman to last for a lifetime as they grow in grace and in the Lord.
The Solemness of Your Promise
The Solemness of Your Promise
Jesus quoted from two passages in the law. (re-emphasized in Deut.)
“You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another. You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
By Jesus’ time people had developed the habit of indicating how serious they were by what they swore upon.
Let your word be your bond. “Let your yes, mean yes; and your no mean no.”
The Source of all Faithfulness
The Source of all Faithfulness
God is a covenant keeping God. He keeps his Word and fulfills His promise.
When he revealed his character to Moses he emphasized his faithfulness.
ex 34:
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
He is the Faithful and True one.
Rev 19:11-
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.
Even when we are not faithful, he remains faithful to his promise.
if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
His promise to you is redemption through his blood.
John 6:
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
