The Sermon on the Mount
The Beatitudes
09-29-2019
Welcome
When I was working on my sermon for this week and began to pray, I believe God gave me this scripture
Matthew Chapter 5
I have thought about preaching on the beatitudes before but have always been nervous
I mean when you think of this sermon
This might actually be one of the most famous sermons of all times
Most defiantly taught by the most amazing preacher of all time Jesus
So you can image that this would be an important sermon to preach and I don’t want to mess it up
Welcome
But this morning as I said earlier we will be in Matthew Chapter 5
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying, 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

When you read that you might start to ask yourself some questions like what does this all mean and how does this all apply to me and if you are those are great questions
When you find the answers please let me know so I can add them to my sermon
but rather than trying to tackle them all today we will cover about half this morning and the rest next Sunday
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
At this point Jesus is famous and He has just finished healing some people
News about Him had gotten around and people were interested in coming to see Jesus
We know that people had such faith that if only they could touch his clothes they thought they would be healed with the sick lady
We know that Jesus had a huge following for this time and people would follow Him where ever
So Jesus seeing this goes up on the mountain and finds a seat and sits down and begins to teach them
Intro
Jesus saw the crowds and almost just the opposite of us
See you and I would almost run up the mountain to get away rather Jesus went up the mountain so He could teach from a better vantage point
Jesus desired to share with them
In the same way He desires to share wisdom and truth with us
Praise the Lord we serve a God who desires to impart wisdom to us
Our response should be to go and sit on the mountain and take good notes
During our time at Branson we were challenged to get away and find an place we could spend time with Jesus at home
I believe God desires to share wisdom with us and to teach us but church I must ask are you being obedient to sit on the mountain?
Or are we so distracted with the things of this world that we ask Jesus for a rain check and another and another
If you and I were being very honest I think we fall into the second one more than the first
This morning I want to encourage you to find a place where you can sit with Jesus and be taught by God
This morning God will begin to teach us on what it is to be blessed by God
Understand this sermon is not a how to be blessed by God but it is a gage on if you are being blessed
This morning we are going to be in Matthew Chapter 5
The short answer to this whole sermon if you really want to know how to be blessed by God it is simple
Walk with Jesus
This morning We will see what that looks like
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
There is a lot of talk about the poor in this scripture
I don’t believe that Jesus is speaking specifically to the monetarily poor or the people who are poor as defined by this world
Rather I believe that Jesus is speaking to a state of mind
It is how you and I think about ourselves
If you and I know Jesus to we walk around with an arrogance about it thinking of others how or why would God save them
No I believe that Jesus is speaking to those who think of themselves humbly before God understanding that God saved me the sinner
12 “Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.
Jesus calls us to humble ourselves
When looking at what to preach this is the particular passage that came
blessed are those who are not spiritually arrogant
Blessed are those who are humble before me
This is a call to humble ourselves before the living God
If we are humble and not spiritually arrogant before God we are rich in faith
Praise the Lord church this is how you and are to live
We are to be a humble people
We are to not be spiritually arrogant, thinking we have all the answers and know better than anyone
Church this is how you and are to be living our-lives to be humble
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
This blessing goes hand in hand with the first one
If the first blessing is about spiritual poverty
It is about the intellectual
This blessing is about the emotional response to be spiritually broken before God
If the first blessing leads us to say that we are spiritually undone, this blessing is the emotion that follows being able to say that before God
Church do you understand the first is about the mind this one is about the emotion that comes we living a humble life before God
If we live a humble life, sometimes we are taken advantage of
Emotionally that is draining, God blesses those who are emotionally spent
But often times we look for comfort in more money, or payback, or a new gadget or whatever it is you look for in comfort
Rather comfort is only found in the hands and arms of Jesus
that is where you and are blessed
18 “I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and to his mourners, 19 Creating the praise of the lips. Peace, peace to him who is far and to him who is near,” Says the Lord, “and I will heal him.” 20 But the wicked are like the tossing sea, For it cannot be quiet, And its waters toss up refuse and mud. 21 “There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”
the righteous are given peace in an un-peaceful world
If you and I walk with God, God gives us peace, and for the wicked He gives turmoil
Peace and comfort are only found In Jesus church nothing else but Jesus
I mean this might be one of the most famous sermons of all time
God will bless those who live a humble life and are not spiritually arrogant and who are emotionally broken running after God
5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
The gentle the humble and the meek shall inherit the earth
Jesus is talking about the humble those who come under the authority of the Lord
Jesus is not talking about those who are powerless rather when we come under authority of Jesus we find freedom
This is a reference of
11 But the humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
This was a promise from the Lord that Gods humble people would inherit the land that God promised them
This is a promise from the Lord that the Jews would inherit the land and not those who are of this world and arrogant
This is a promise that you and I if we walk with Jesus and humble ourselves we will inherit heaven we will go to heaven and spend eternity with Jesus
This is the blessing of those who gentle and humble
This is what it is to run after Jesus
Finally this morning
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
To walk with Jesus you and I should desire righteousness
We should seek it with our energy
We just run after it
To desire something is to have those glands in your mouth water
That is how you and I should desire and thirst and hunger for righteousness
22 Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
This is what it is to thirst for righteousness when we resist the junk
You and I are to flee from the lusts of this world and pursue righteousness
This is what it looks like to walk with Jesus
When you and I walk with Jesus He blesses that
Understand church this is not a list that you can create and check off and think since I have checked off the list God is required to bless me now
most defiantly preached by the most famous preacher of all time
No that is not the case
Rather this is a gage if you will this is a reminder
This is a picture of what it looks like to walk and run with Jesus
This morning as we move to close we want to invite you this morning
We want to invite you this morning if you are here and have never made a profession of faith
if you have never invited Jesus to be Lord of your life
We want to invite you to do that this morning
There will be people down front who will open up the Bible and show you how Jesus died for your sin and how He loves you enough that while you and I were still sinners Jesus still went to the cross for you
They will show you in scripture how you if you confess with your mouth and believer in your heart and call out to Jesus you will be saved
Or maybe you are here and you have done that but for whatever reason you and not walking with Jesus
This morning we want to invite you to walk with Jesus
The altar is open
