Review from last week:
Sin no more?
Is this possible?
What is the worse thing?
What did the man do?
Went and ratted Jesus out to the Jews.
What did this cause for Jesus?
v. 16
Notice Jesus answer:
What is Jesus saying?
If my Father is working then it is ok for me to be working- claiming equality with God.
My authority to work on the Sabath is the same authority that my Father has.
Did the Jews get the message?
v. 18 (Making himself equal with God!)
Defining what sin looks like- Jesus never sinned because he always did what?
What he saw the Father doing.
Every action of Jesus was not merely the omission of evil, but the positively he only did exactly what the Father would have done, exactly what the Father wanted Him to do.
Who can live that way?
Perfectly all the time?
NO ONE CAN!
What is the solution?
End of v. 20- what will the Son do?
Greater works than these?
What are the “these?”
Healing the lame man.
What are the greater works?
So what are the greater works?
What else?
What are the greater works?
Judgement given to the Son.
What judgment are we talking about?
SIN NO MORE context.
We are all going to have to stand before Jesus in judgement, and that judgement will be whether or not we are sinners.
Are we in trouble?
What is the solution?
Why did the Father commit judgement unto the Son?
What is the solution to standing in judgement before the Son?
Not coming into judgement in the first place?
How is that possible?
What are the eternal consequences of this truth?
Read v. 29 for me again:
Here is the judgement that we were talking about back in v. 22.
Two kinds of outcomes- what are they?
Those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life- how many good deeds?
Those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgement.-
how many evil deeds?
What is the limit of evil deeds that we can commit before we face the judgement of God? SIN NO MORE!
So if I have failed, if I have committed evil deeds- if I have gone out and sinned even one time what resurrection will i face?
life or judgement?
Is there any hope for me?
There is a way that even if you have committed evil deeds you can bypass the judgement of God altogether!
How is that possible?
Does God just overlook our evil deeds?
What was necessary in order for God to allow us to not come into judgment?
Lord’s supper!
What must a person do in order to bypass judgement?
Hears my word and believes Him who sent me- has eternal life and does not come into judgment.
Jesus is calling for a decision here- he is calling for belief.
What does He want us to believe?
Who is Jesus claiming to be?
What did Jesus claim in:
v. 18? Equality with God
v. 19? Able to do all the works of God
v. 20? See all that the God the Father does
v. 21? Raise the dead, give life to whom He wishes- He claimed the right to choose who should receive life!
v. 22?
He claimed the right to judge all men
v. 23?
He demanded that all men “honor” or worship Him, in the same way that they honor or worship the Father!
v. 24? Jesus is equating hearing (obeying) his word with believing the Father, and that this would free a person from being judged.
Jesus is forcing people to make a decision about who he is!
There are three options available to people at this point:
How would you react if someone you had not met before announced that He was equal with God, that He could create life the same way God does, that He would judge everyone, that He demanded the same worship give to God, and that obeying His word was equal to believing God?
What would your reaction be?
Jesus needed to be treated for severe psychological problems
Jesus was deliberately lying
Jesus was and is God
His claims leave us with no other alternatives.
What was the Jews ultimate problem?
