When you have to drive a vehicle that is not yours… nothing is where you ‘remember’ it. Sometimes we become so familiar with things we do regularly we dont even think about it. Today I hope to help us guard against that for the Lord’s Supper.
If you’ve taken the Lord’s supper 4 times a year since you were 10, and you are 60, that’s 200 times coming to the table. After so many times, this may be something we have grown too familiar with. Let’s look at scripture to help guard...
1 Corinthians 10:16–18 ESV
16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?
1 Corinthians 10:16–17 ESV
16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.
When Paul uses ‘participation’ he is using a word you are very familiar with: koinonia. Sharing fellowship. In common fellowship. And he is making the point we have the body and the blood ‘in common’.
When Paul uses ‘participation’ he is using a word you are very familiar with: koinonia. Sharing fellowship. In common fellowship. And he is making the point we have the body and the blood ‘in common’.
Jesus told His disciples at the Last Supper that taking the bread and the cup was sharing in His sacrifice. Having it in common with Him.
He cannot be sacrificed again. It was once for all time and once for all mankind. ‘Whosoever’.
But we share in the sacrifice with Him. And we do so as one body. “We who are many are one body BECAUSE we partake of the one bread.”
It gives us common ground with one another as the body.
It gives us common ground with Christ who is the head of that one body.
Can we take just a second to recognize the ?meaning? of Christ being the head? This analogy shows us we do what He wants. Think about your own body for a sec, not counting heartbeats and breathing, your body does what your brain tells it to. When it doesnt something is wrong. When your body does something your brain ISNT telling it to do, something is wrong.
So we refocus with the Lord’s Supper. We remember our place in this relationship with Him and with each other. We remember ‘as He as been to me, so I will be to others’.
But when the head and body are working correctly, beautiful things happen. Art springs forth from the brush of the artist. Music flows from the hands of the musician. And when we the body are ‘in participation’ with He the head, beautiful things happen.
good news is brought to the poor healing is offered to the broken-hearted those captive to sin are set free comfort is given to mourners beauty is traded for ashes gladness for mourning and splendid clothes instead of despair ancient ruins are rebuilt, former devastations are restored ruined cities are renewed
They will rebuild the ancient ruins; they will restore the former devastations; they will renew the ruined cities,
When we the body do what He the head desires.
Today He desires we take the Lord’s supper in a worthy manner. The very pointed and very simple instructions are found in
1 Corinthians 11:27–34 ESV
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world. 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another— 34 if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home—so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come.
So we will take a moment to do just that. There will be a song played on the sound system. This is an opportunity for all of us to do just what scripture tells us to do. This is not time for the musicians or deacons to come forward to prepare. Just time for all of us be ready to take the Lord’s Supper.
Finally, we come to the table
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 ESV
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
