Teaching His disciples a lesson.

Intro: Jesus was the greatest teacher to ever live.
Matthew
Matthew 7:29 NASB95
29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
Even though He was a great teacher, it seems the disciples were slow learners. Everything He did was for a reason, and had a lesson that went with it. From the sermon on the mount. all the parables He taught, lost sheep, the prodigal son, the sowing of the seed and the miracles, the raising the dead back to life.
Many people had seen what He did and heard what He had to say. Some liked it, other didn’t. Some believed other didn’t. He had become a popular man. Being popular doesn’t mean everyone likes you, or understands you.
Nicodemus knew there was something special. His own disciples said, “what manner of man is this that even the wind and sea obey him?
Now it is time for another lesson, and Jesus will ask them a question and speak about His own future.

Who do you say that I am?

He will first ask, who do men (people) say that I am, but He is getting around to asking the disciples the same question. Were they learning enough, had they really been listening? He had just asked them “how is it that you don’t understand”
Mark 8:22 NKJV
22 Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him.
Mark 8:27 KJV 1900
27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?
They were now about 20 miles north on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus is making His way to Jerusalem. He is around 8 months to the cross. He will found guilty of Blasphemy. He was not guilty, He was the Son of the living God. He was God in the flesh. He was the true Messiah. All that He had done, all the teaching He had done. What did the people think about Him? Who did they think He was?
a. Jesus ask them, “who do people say that I am”
b. Jesus wasn’t asking this question to gain knowledge for Himself. He already knew the hearts of men and what they thought of Him. (By the way, Jesus knows our hearts today! He knows whether you have truly accepted and confessed Him as Savior, or if you view Him less than your personal Savior.)
c. Jesus asked this because He knew men had a distorted perception of who He really was. He knew of their worship and devotion to Caesar and their rejection of Him. The Jews were waiting for the Messiah, but a king, not a preacher.
d. He knew that many Jews had rejected the Son of God as the Messiah. He wanted the disciples to ponder their faith in Him as well. We must all answer this eternal question.
e. Who is Jesus to you? It is the most important question people could ask themselves, for their response determines their destiny both in this life and the life to come.
Mark 8:28 KJV 1900
28 And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.
Mark 8:
But there were others things people thought about Jesus.
f. . BEELZEBUB... 1. Some had identified Jesus with Beelzebub, that is, Satan -
F. MENTALLY DERANGED... Some of His family - ;
The disciples answer to Jesus.
John the Baptist:
a. King Herod thought this when he heard about Jesus -
b. Perhaps motivated by guilt for having beheaded John.
c. Elijah: Likely based on their misunderstanding of Malachi's prophecy.
Malachi 4:5 NASB95
5 “Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.
D. ONE OF THE PROPHETS...
a. One of the old prophets risen again
b. As mentioned in Luke's account of this conversation.
Luke 9:19 NASB95
19 They answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again.”
Luke e9:19
c. Jesus knew who people through He was. He knew what the disciples thought. He is teaching them. He will leave this earth soon and it will be their job to share the good news. They still have a lot to learn, but they are getting there.
Mark 8:29 KJV 1900
29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.
:
Mark 8:28 NASB95
28 They told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.”
Mark 8:29 NASB95
29 And He continued by questioning them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.”
2. Jesus now asks His disciples. Who do you say I am?
a. Peter Speaks up. “You are the Christ” He saw Jesus as the Messiah, the anointed one, King, the one they had been waiting for. Maybe they had been discussing this among themselves.
b. What Jesus had been teaching, they were starting to get. But Jesus was not what He was expecting as the Messiah. His next statement throws them off, at least for Peter.
c.
Mark 8:30 KJV 1900
30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.
But Jesus was not what He was expecting as the Messiah.
Mark 8:30 NASB95
30 And He warned them to tell no one about Him.
Why did Jesus warn them to keep quiet about him? For one thing, the disciples still had a lot to learn about what it meant to be a true follower of Jesus. Jesus had spoke of His suffering, they would learn later that they too would suffer. They would be rejected. They too would die.
a. The religious leaders had already made up their mind about Jesus. (ELAB) To proclaim Him as Messiah at this point would mess up God’s plans. If He was proclaimed as the Messiah now, they would try to kill Him now. That had to be done at the time of the Passover.
b. People wanted: they see His miracles, but had little desire to submit to His message and be a true follower. To announce Him as Messiah would result in a political uprising, that would only do harm.
2. What do people says about Jesus is today. Some don’t believe at all. Some people believe that was a Jesus, but don’t believe in who He really is. Some in church believe in Jesus and who He is, but are not willing to submit to Him.
a. Some religious believe He was just a prophet. Some that He was a good man.
b. To have eternal life, you must believe, repent and give Him your life, and become His follower.

II. Be mindful of Godly things.

Mark 8:31–33 KJV 1900
31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
Mark 8:31–33 NASB95
31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
Our ways are not God’s ways.
Isaiah
Isaiah 55:8–9 NASB95
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.
Peter’s confession opened the door. He and the others had at least come to know who He was.
a. He could now begin to lead them on to a deeper truth. The cross would soon come. They had been expecting a crown.
“He began to teach them”
b. What did he teach? He may have should the places in the O.T that spoke of His suffering. How the passover and the day of atonement showed His suffering.
c. He told them, He must suffer many things, be rejected by the elders,(the governing body of the Sanhedrin) chief priest, the scribes. Be killed and rise again in 3 days.
d. Jesus was teaching them what He has come into the world to do.This is the first time that He clearly and openly began to tell them that He had come into this world to die.
e. When Jesus talked about the cross, His passion, His suffering. He emphasized 3 things.
The necessity of it.
“Must suffer” Must is a word that Jesus used speaking of the cross. He told Nicodemus; “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up”
He also told
a. Why must? Did Jesus mean that He was going to be a victim of circumstances, that He had no choice, and that because of that He had to be crucified? No. What He was talking about was God’s plan, about God’s eternal will. Jesus had to die on the cross for man’s sins. It was the only way.
b God is love. That is the reason He sent His son to die on the cross for the sins of the world.
c. God is Holy. God is just. How can a loving God love the sinner and at the same time deal with sin? Because He is a Holy God, He cannot over look sin; He cannot fail to deal with it.
d. So how can a Holy God deal with sin and yet be a loving God who forgive sinners? How can God love and be just at the same time? The solution was the cross. This was God’s plan from the beginning.
e. When Jesus talked about the cross to the disciples he just the term “must”. When He suffered, bled, and died on the cross, it was God’s way of dealing with human sin, and providing forgiveness for the sinner.
2. The Misery of it.
“The son of man must suffer many things
a. He would be rejected by His own people, the political leaders, the religious leaders. “Rejected, killed.”
b. His death wold be a violent death. He would be slaughtered. Dying on a cross was the most violent form of punishment there was.
Isaiah 52:14 NASB95
14 Just as many were astonished at you, My people, So His appearance was marred more than any man And His form more than the sons of men.
Isaiah
a. Jesus body was marred He was unrecognizable. He didn’t even look human.
Marred: Bang up, bruised, beaten, mutilated.
b. That was the reason Jesus Jesus was born and lived. He came to die on the cross because He loves us. What held Jesus on the cross, not the nails, it was His love. Love held Him there.
Marred: Bang up, bruised, beaten, mutilated.
3. The Victory of it.
3. The Victory of it.
a. Jesus said He would rise again three days later. Jesus kept referring to His victory over death, but His disciples kept missing it.
He would rise again.
b. The though of Jesus being killed, hung on a cross was something Peter was hear.
Mark 8:22 NKJV
22 Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him.
Mark 8:32 KJV 1900
32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.
Mark 8:32
Matthew 16:22 NKJV
22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!”
M
c. The words spoke had spoken before “you are the Christ” was an inspiration from heaven. What Peter is saying now, rebuking Jesus is an inspiration from hell.
d. This can happen to us. One minute we can be just a spiritual as we can possibility be. you’ve been inspired by a message, someone has encouraged you, reading a bible verse, or music. You are spiritually fired up.
e. But then somethings happens. Something detracts you. It could be a bad situation, and you begin to think more about the situation an less about the spiritual things. Maybe things are not going the way you wanted them to go.
f. This is what happened to Peter here. He didn’t want a Messiah that would suffer, be rejected and die. He wanted a Messiah that would rule. He allowed the devil to get into his head speak for him.
Mark 8:33 NASB95
33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
Jesus turns around, “be gone Satan, Get away from me, get behind me.
a. “for you are not setting your mind on God’s interest, but mans”
b. Peter wanted a Messiah to rule, not one that would die.
c. For Christians, for PGBC. It say to be about what God wants. We have to be willing to make sacrifices, we have to be willing to go the extra mile. We have to be willing to lead people to the cross. Satan wants to keep people away from the cross.
d. Without the cross, there is no salvation. Are you being mindful of Godly things?
