Intro
In Matthew chapter 12 we find that the Pharisees are focusing on Jesus and they are with him, following him and watching what He is doing all the time.
I want you to know that there will always be people watching you, seeing how you live and what you do… it is hear that we have the greatest opportunity to be a witness to the work of God in your life.
They hope to condemn Jesus and yes, some will hope to condemn you.
But I would say just hold your head up and keep looking up, live for Jesus for He is coming soon.
But when you look at chapter 12 you see all these attacks, the questioning and so forth.
It begins with pulling some heads of wheat off the plants in the field to eat as they were walking on the Sabbath..
and from there beginning in verse 9, Jesus heals the man with the withered hand in the synagogue on the Sabbath, and Jesus is arguing, is it not right to do good on the sabbath?
And it is here that the Pharisees conspired to kill Jesus so he slipped away from their midst and went on and this is where we encounter our text today, look at it with me, Matthew 12, verses 22-23 to begin with...
Now this is recorded in two of the gospels.... and Luke 11
;
So lets set the stage if you will, Jesus is there and they, the people bring a man to Jesus, we are not told who… maybe the pharisees arranged this… we are not sure but we do know this,
A man with a great need comes before the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Three things wrong with him
Demon possessed, blind and mute.... Now it is likely that the demonic oppression caused the other two or that in a weakened state, the last two made it easier for the first one to happen..
We are uncertain of this...
But this man man appear as one representing the nation itself.
They were under the oppression of the devil , blind and mute, unable to see and recognize the king of Kings, nor able to offer Him praise if he was recognized.
And look at what happens...
Jesus healed him… which meant three things were done as well...
He cast our the demonic spirit, he opened his eyes that he might see and his mouth was made whole that he might speak from the heart.
And we are told that he spoke’
Most likely since the Pharisees rejected him, he was said that he opened his mouth and spoke.
Most likely even though we are not told what he said, he can imagine that He gave thanks to Jesus and praised the Lord of heaven.
That is in my imagination.
And here is the other piece of information… the people marveled at what was happening!
They asked could this be the Son of David, essentially the Messiah...
God was receiving even more glory, can you say Praise the Lord.
God was receiving even more glory, can you say Praise the Lord.
That was happening...
and the Pharisees hated it… and they condemned Jesus.
Vrese 24
They say, the Devil, the devil gives him the power to control over demons…
What a sad accusation, They did not agree with Nicodemus evaluation of His miracles..
How terrible to insist that Jesus worked by the power of Satan and not by the power of God.
and Jesus tells them just how absurd their response his… and shameful as well.
Look at verses 25-30
Essentially, how stupid for them to even make such claims… why.. first off he says no kingdom practices division.
Satan would nit fight against himself.
Jesus affirmed that truth that Satan has a kingdom, he is the god of this age, the prince and power of the air.
Listen to verse 31 even....
Jesus also speaks of a house, satan having lodging if you will in the body of this poor man who is blind, mute and possessed by a evil spirit.
If Satan kicks his minions out of the house, does he not oppose himself and divide his kingdom?
Sure he does...
Jesus is able to cast out demons because he had authority and dominion over him, who do..
He is the creator and Satan was merely a created being, a angel who rebelled and was cast out of heaven.
Now look again verses 28-30
-20
Jesus puts them on the defensive and throws the true scenario out to them.
Jesus works by the power of God, and if He is truly the “strong man” He can bind up the other perspn, enter into his house and take what rightfully belongs to the father back and leave the bound one without any treasures…
Jesus is teaching them a important piece of doctrine here, the kingdom of God has indeed come and that is why the devil is at a lose, the man who was possessed has been set free...
.
The exorcisms demonstrate that God in Christ is decisively defeating the devil.
As has often been noted, D-Day has come, though not yet V-Day.
Satan is in his death throes.
His last flurry of activity, to change the metaphor, is like that of a chicken (or perhaps better a snake!) with its head cut off.
Amen amen
