An eternal redemption

John 1:12 ESV
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
When we gather for the Lord’s Table, we do so in obedience to our Lord’s command - 1 Cor 11:23-26
1 Corinthians 11:26 ESV
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
In considering Christ’s command that we were to take the bread and the cup in remembrance of him, we have opened the Scriptures with the pray that we would remember what we are to remember in accordance with what the word of God teaches.
When we consider Christ’s broken body and shed blood, the word of God uses certain terms. These terms come from the word of God. While there is the temptation to replace with a defining phrase, that defining phrase or definition has its place but I would suggest that we should never set aside the word that we need to do our best to define - example love versus definition.
Nowhere is that more clear than in the Apostle Paul’s explanation of love.
1 Corinthians 13:2–8 ESV
And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
1 Cor 13:2-
No one would disagree with the fact that for most of the world, love has lost most of its meaning. For that reason all of us need to be reminded of what love really is, both by definition and its embodiment in God the Father and God the Son.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 15:13 ESV
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
To this point we have worked our way through . We have also allowed the word of God to refresh our minds and hearts with regard to the ways in which Scriptural terms - atonement and propitiation - enable us to better understand and remember what was accomplished by Christ willingly allowing His body to be broken and His blood to be shed in our place.
Today we direct our attention to another word from the Scriptures - REDEMPTION
Redemption - repurchase or buy back” (simple definition - Webster’s Dictionary)
The simplest theological definition would be:
Redemption - “deliverance from sin and freedom from captivity” but there is more that can and should be said.
Although we will focus mostly on the NT use of redemption, we will also consider a bit of the use of the term in the OT.
Central to our study of redemption will be .
Hebrews 9:11–13 ESV
But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh,
We are wise to search the Scriptures to learn is meant by redemption, which the writer of Hebrews reminds his readers is an eternal redemption - eternal both in quality and quantity of time - longevity.
When we open our English language Bibles, we are at a bit of disadvantage, the reason being, in the Greek NT there are 2 words and the variations of those two words, all of which are translated - redeem, redemption. And while translating those different words is accurate/theologically correct and totally accurate, there is no way that one word can adequately capture and convey the slightly different nuance of each word.
Some might say, no big deal, move on and do not linger over the smaller details But some times smaller details are important.
Vine’s Greek NT Dictionary helps us here.
