The movie Yesterday - Something happens. All of the power goes off. When it returns the world has changed in little ways. There’s no Coca Cola, only Pepsi. And no one has ever heard of the Beatles or their music. And so a failing musician starts to play their songs and becomes known as the greatest songwriter in the world. But there are two other people who remember and they start to follow him. What do they want? Are they sinister? He knows he’s living a lie and will he be black mailed? Will he be exposed? One day he’s handed a yellow submarine and is told two people want to meet with him. Thinking he’ll be arrested, they simply want to say thank you for the happiness he has brought back to them. And then they say this: “A world without the Beatles is a world that’s infinitely worse.”
“A world without the Beatles is a world that’s infinitely worse.”
And that caused me to Imagine. Imagine a world where there’s no Jesus, it’s easy if you try. No Messiah. But there’s still evil, there’s still a need for forgiveness. There’s still guilt and shame and a need to know that restoration has taken place.
But there is a promise of a savior who will come. And there is a system of sacrifice and a central place of worship with a place to present offerings, and a large tent and there’s within the tent a room.
Let’s read together.

There is ritual and fasting and abstinence but there is no sacrifice. There is no temple.

Deuteronomy 4:5–9 ESV
5 See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today? 9 “Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—

Leviticus 16:1–21 ESV
1 The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the Lord and died, 2 and the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat. 3 But in this way Aaron shall come into the Holy Place: with a bull from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. 4 He shall put on the holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body, and he shall tie the linen sash around his waist, and wear the linen turban; these are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and then put them on. 5 And he shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering. 6 “Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. 7 Then he shall take the two goats and set them before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 8 And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats, one lot for the Lord and the other lot for Azazel. 9 And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the Lord and use it as a sin offering, 10 but the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the Lord to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel. 11 “Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. He shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself. 12 And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the Lord, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and he shall bring it inside the veil 13 and put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony, so that he does not die. 14 And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side, and in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times. 15 “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it over the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat. 16 Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses. 17 No one may be in the tent of meeting from the time he enters to make atonement in the Holy Place until he comes out and has made atonement for himself and for his house and for all the assembly of Israel. 18 Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the Lord and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around. 19 And he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it and consecrate it from the uncleannesses of the people of Israel. 20 “And when he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat. 21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness.
Leviticus 16:
This event is called the Day of Atonement. Yom Kippur. This year it begins at sunset on Tuesday evening and concludes at nightfall on Wednesday evening.
Block - prayer to every god - pg 34-35
Daniel Block had quoted a “Prayer to Every God” found in ancient Nineveh that showed that the psyche of the worshiper was that 1) They knew the gods were angry at them. 2) They didn’t know which gods were angry at them or why and 3) They didn’t know what to do to be made right with those gods.
The God is Israel is vastly different: He shares His name and very nature with us, gives us reasons why we are not right with Him and gives us clear instruction on what it takes to become right with Him. Wow!
Hebrews 7:23–28 ESV
23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. 28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

Hebrews 10:4 ESV
4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Believer’s Bible Commentary V. The Day of Atonement (Chap. 16)

In vivid contrast is the work of Christ, by which human sins are totally removed instead of being merely covered for a year! Isaac Watts expressed it this way:

Not all the blood of beasts

On Jewish altars slain,

Could give the guilty conscience peace,

Or wash away its stain.

But Christ, the heavenly Lamb

Took all our sins away,

A sacrifice of nobler name

And richer blood than they.

Hebrews 9:7–12 ESV
7 but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. 8 By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing 9 (which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 10 but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation. 11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
Believer’s Bible Commentary V. The Day of Atonement (Chap. 16)

The hymnwriter has expressed it thus:

My sins were laid on Jesus,

The spotless Lamb of God;

He bore them all and freed me

From the accursed load.

My guilt was borne by Jesus;

He cleansed the crimson stains

In His own blood most precious

And not a spot remains.

In God’s kingdom, holiness isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord’’ (). Yes, God wants His children to be happy, but true happiness begins with holiness. “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled’’ (). “If I had my choice of all the blessings I can conceive of,’’ said Charles Spurgeon, “I would choose perfect conformity to the Lord Jesus, or, in one word, holiness.’’ Would you make the same choice? Leviticus tells New Testament Christians how to appreciate holiness and appropriate it into their every day lives. (2) An announced purpose (16:30–34)
The Hebrew word kapar, translated “atonement,’’ is used sixteen times in , and it basically means “to ransom, to remove by paying a price.’’ The priest placed his hands on the head of the sacrifice, symbolizing the transferring of the nation’s sins to the innocent victim who died in their place. Atonement means that a price is paid and blood is shed, because life must be given for life (17:11). John Stott says it magnificently: “We strongly reject, therefore, every explanation of the death of Christ which does not have at its center the principle of ‘satisfaction through substitution,’ indeed divine self-satisfaction through divine self-substitution.’’ The word “blood’’ is used nine times in this chapter and thirteen times in chapter 17. In an article that appeared in the September 28 edition of the New York Times, Professor Margaret O’Mara titles her article “The Church of Techno Optimism” - Neither liberal nor conservative, the true ideology of Silicon Valley is an unwavering belief in the power of technology.
You have a new morality because you have an entirely new way of looking at the world. And, even as there is this massive investment in social and cultural liberalism coming from Silicon Valley, it is not tied to a coherent political philosophy. It is tied to an overarching religious commitment. This religion of techno-optimism.
One of the points that Professor O'Mara makes is that when you are looking at the big figures in Silicon Valley, many of them have spoken openly of their disdain for all political parties, for politics in general. And here's where we need to understand what's fundamentally happening. Those who are committed to this new religion of techno-optimism believe that technology, their technologies, are so revolutionary that technology will deliver on the promises that experimental science could not. And you also have the idea, indeed the religious faith, that this kind of technological progress will eventually solve all human problems. And the techno-optimists seem to believe if they can't be solved by technology, they just can't be solved.
But technology can’t forgive sin, or remove guilt and shame. Or give new life. Or give eternal life.
Hebrews 7:23–27 ESV
23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.
25 - Jesus is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him
25 - He always lives to make intercession for them
26 - He is our holy, innocent, unstained, exalted high priest
27 - His sacrifice was made once for all
This is the day that we celebrate Jesus. Not the helpless baby who can be anything you want him to be. This is the savior, the sinless priest, the lamb who died, the scapegoat who carries away your sin. This is Jesus the perfect savior who laid aside his attributes of deity and took on flesh so that he could die for you.
This is not
And now he invites you to draw near to him in humility and repentance. He invites you to to rest from your attempts to earn your way to heaven.
For the believer he invites you to fill in the blanks. Jesus was a good man. Jesus died on the cross. Jesus forgives sin. Jesus removes sin. Jesus carries your sin away. Jesus intercedes on your behalf. Jesus has torn the veil that separates us from true and intimate fellowship with the Father.
If you do not know Christ, why not believe in him as the Savior who died for you.
If you are a believer, take this opportunity to open your heart and mind to the greatness of Jesus as the perfect savior because he was the perfect sacrifice and He now reigns as our perfect high priest.

The word holy is used 91 times in Leviticus, and words connected with cleansing are used 71 times. References to uncleanness number 128. There’s no question what this book is all about.

The main purpose of the day of atonement ceremonies is to cleanse the sanctuary from the pollutions introduced into it by the unclean worshippers (cf. , ). Without a purpose such as this there would have been little point in the high priest putting his life at risk by entering into the holy of holies. The aim of these rituals is to make possible God’s continued presence among his people. (The New International Commentary on the Old Testament - Leviticus)

The spotless Lamb of God;

He bore them all and freed me

From the accursed load.

My guilt was borne by Jesus;

He cleansed the crimson stains

In His own blood most precious

And not a spot remains.

Deut 4:
Deuteronomy 4:6–9 ESV
