Typology discussion
Growth - OT growth and Spiritual growth
The Old Testament cannot be “useless” becuase Paul said it is “useful” ().
List the reasons why we should not abandon the OT?
Is there a difference between the English and Hebrew Scriptures? What is that difference?
English Bibles:
English Bibles:
• The Pentateuch These are the books from Genesis to Deuteronomy. The Bible calls this section the Torah. This word is often translated “the Law,” but that is somewhat misleading. The word actually means “guidance” or “teaching,”
• Historical books. The books from Joshua to Esther give us the story of Israel, from the conquest of Canaan to the time after the Jews return from exile in Babylon—a period stretching from roughly 1200 to 450 bc.
• Poetic books. The books from Job to Song of Songs are a mixture of worship songs, wisdom texts, and a beautiful love poem.
• Prophets. Finally, the whole section from Isaiah to Malachi are books compiled from the preaching of those God raised up as prophets over a period of approximately three hundred years.
Hebrew Scriptures
The Torah (a Greek word that means “five books”)
• The Pentateuch (as above).
The Prophets
• The Former Prophets: Joshua, Judges, 1-2 Samuel, and 1-2 Kings (Jews regarded these as prophetic—that is, history told from God’s point of view).
• The Latter Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Book of the Twelve, from Hosea to Malachi.
The Writings
• Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Ruth, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, and 1-2 Chronicles.
“the Old Testament fundamentally tells a story”
“it tells the essential first part of the great story that the whole Bible tells”
What does he mean “we are in the Bible”?
(discussion)
We can picture the whole Bible as a drama with seven acts.
Could someone list the 7 dramas on the board?
Throw out any conception of the bible as a “book full of promises, rules, or doctrines.”
What does the mission of Jesus that he has given to each of us look like?
List the reasons why we should not abandon the OT?
“Read the book with your Bible close at hand so that you can check out some of the references that I have scattered in to support the points being made.”
Go through the discussion questions for Chapter 1 next week.
Chapter 1: Creation
1. How would you define a worldview? How does the book define it?
2. What does it mean that creation is distinct from but dependent on God?
3. What makes humans special or unique? What messages do you hear from our culture about the difference between humans and other living beings?
4. Do you tend to think of sin as something that affects individuals or groups of people? How have you seen sin affect society as a whole or generations of people?
5. What is the solution that God provides for sin?
