Introduction:
“You are...” - , Jesus is explaining our identity and who we are with the implication that we have a purpose and task
scope and place: salt of the earth…light of the world; we are to be in the world but we are to do something in relation to the world
Salt of the Earth
taste: it’s about distinction and distinctiveness
prevent corruption:
Light of the World
it’s about visibility
The Power of Example
Be visible
Do good
Influence others
Some people may not know about us and what we are doing to serve God in our community because...
Vocal problem: we are silent and don’t actively find situations to tell people about Christ and salvation
Perception problem: people look for all the big activities that we do and when they see that we don’t do those, they go somewhere else
Numbers problem: only a few people attend with us compared to other groups, people like what is “new” (internally, only a few people do the work that it takes many people to do)
Work problem: we aren’t doing anything to actively tell people about the church of Christ—no evangelism
Image problem: people think we are too good and better than everyone else
Despite some of these “problems” (some of which are because we stand for the truth) we shy away from being the salt of the earth or light of the world—we begin to doubt our real influence and example.
