09(1Sam 16, 01-13) God Chooses a New King
I. GOD’S CHOICE IS CONTRARY TO HUMAN REASON
A. God’s Choice Is Not According To Physical Stature. (1 Sam 16:6-10)
§ One would think Samuel would have known better than to use appearance as a standard.
§ In essence, God told Samuel, “You’re looking only at the cover. I’m looking at the core.”
B. God’s Choice Is Not According To Positional Status. (1 Sam 16:11a)
§ David was the baby of the family. As such, he was deemed worthy of only the more menial tasks.
§ Surely God wouldn’t choose a mere shepherd boy to be king of Israel, would He?
C. God’s Choice Is Not According To Popular Sentiment. (11a)
§ There is some indication that the words “the youngest” imply more than merely age.
§ It meant he was the least in his father’s estimation; wasn’t considered necessary to include him
§ God doesn’t make His choice based on people’s opinions. (1 Corinthians 1:27-29)
II. GOD’S CHOICE IS CONDITIONED UPON THE HEART (1 Sam 16:7)
A. David’s Heart Was Focused On God. (Psalm 57:6-7)
§ Psalm 57:6 They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down; They have dug a pit before me; Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen. 7 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise.
§ To be fixed on God is to have faith toward Him, to trust Him with your life.
§ David chose to see God in the affairs of life: saw the hand of God in the starry sky. (Psalm 19:1)
§ Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
§ David comprehended God’s love for him while watching his father’s sheep. (Psalm 23:1,6)
§ Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
§ King David saw God all around him—in the everyday things of life.
§ We’d all be a lot happier if we’d learn to do the same.
B. David’s Heart Was In Fellowship With God.
§ Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.
§ Psalm 27:8 When You said, "Seek My face," My heart said to You, "Your face, LORD, I will seek."
§ Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; 24 and see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.
III. GOD’S CHOICE IS CHARACTERIZED BY HEAVENLY RECOGNITION
A. We may not know the heart of another-
§ but there are certain evidences by which a man whom God has chosen becomes known
§ because heaven has bestowed upon him certain qualities which mark him out.
B. Unfortunately, how often we meet professing Christian people today who have:
§ No power in witness, no radiance in their faces.
§ No sweetness in their personalities, no reality in their spiritual lives.
§ The Holy Spirit is in them, but not upon them in power and reality.
A. David Was Controlled By The Spirit. (1 Sam 16:13)
§ David may have only been a former shepherd boy, but he had learned to walk with God.
§ The issue as far as God’s choice is concerned, is not stature, status, or smarts. It is spirituality.
