11(1Kings 02,01-04) A Need for Heroes

Introduction.

I.       Heroes are Strong. “Be a Man”

A.     Strong: courageous, prevail.

B.     Prove yourself a man. Become a man.

C.     Courage to do what? Keep the charge of the Lord.

§  Walk in His ways.

§  Keep His statutes, commandments, judgments, and testimonies.

II.    Heroes are Successful.

A.     In all that you do and in wherever you turn.

B.     That the Lord may fulfill His word.

§  If your sons walk before Me with all their heart and soul,

§  Your legacy will continue.

III. Heroes are Role Models. “Be a man of God.”

A.     Solomon learned this from his own example of David.

B.     He would share the wisdom of this in Psalm 127.

§  Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.

§  Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman watches in vain.

§  It is useless to rise up early to stay up late, to eat the bread of sorrows.

Conclusion.

Homer Hickman was a student in an impoverished high school in an impoverished coal mining town in West Virginia. He dreamed of escaping the life of coal mining and becoming an astronaut. He had heard of Sputnik and wanted to be a part of the space program – quite a dream for a coal miner’s son. He had a teacher who believed in him and his friends who shared that dream, but he had a father who saw such dreaming as foolishness and wanted his son to follow his steps into the coal mine.

But he persisted in his dream and with the help of his teacher, Miss Riley, managed with a few missteps to enter the science fair with their rocket experiments.

He told Homer, “You met your hero, and didn’t even know it.” The truth was, his father was his hero, and he didn’t even know it. There are some fathers here today who are heroes, but they don’t even know it.
