Introduction:
§ Elisha is one of the lesser known prophets in the Bible, but an important one.
§ DESIGN FOR DISCIPLESHIP.
§ I Kings 19:19ff.
§ Now, here we find a graphic illustration of what true discipleship is in the discipleship of Elisha as he followed after Elijah that illustrate our discipleship as we follow after the Lord Jesus Christ.
I.
There is a person to please.
(1 Kings 19:21)
§ To be a disciple of someone means that you set your heart, your mind, to please that person.
§ Elisha understood the mantle.
Elijah was saying I want you now to come after me.
§ And our God has called us to be disciples.
§ Matthew 4:19ff.
§ Discipleship is not a movement, but a man.
§ Just as Elisha followed Elijah, James, John, Peter and the rest followed the Lord Jesus Christ.
A. Do you want to be a disciple?
§ Being a disciple is not primarily being a member of Cross Roads Baptist church.
§ It's not being a Baptist primarily.
It's not winning souls.
It's not primarily being a bible student.
§ It is fellowship with the Lord Jesus.
Knowing Jesus intimately, following the Lord Jesus Christ.
§ And when will we ever learn that fellowship with Christ comes before service for Christ.
B. We must minister to Jesus before we can minister to anyone else.
§ Have you ever thought about ministering to Jesus?
Over and over in the Psalms we're taught to minister to the Lord.
And here we find out that Elisha minister to Elijah.
§ And do you know what my job today is before I can do anything else, before I can minister to you?
§ I have to minister to the Lord, to please the Lord, to praise the Lord.
I have to follow the Lord.
§ Are you willing to be a slave of Jesus?
Are you willing to follow Jesus?
§ Are you willing to do that?
To say Lord Jesus, wherever you lead, I'll go.
Now, if you don't follow him, you cannot be his disciple.
§ It is fellowship with Christ.
knowing Christ, loving Christ, abiding in Christ.
C. I'm afraid that too many are doing things /for/ Christ rather than sitting at the feet of Christ.
§ Good to serve but when will we learn we must minister to Jesus before we can minister to others.
§ Illustration of little girl who loved her daddy and spents months in her room making slippers for Christmas present.
He liked them but missed the time apart.
§ Elisha wanted to please Elijah and I want to please the Lord Jesus.
II.
There is a price to pay.
(19:19-20)
A. The first thing he forsook was his position.
§ He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen.
§ Now, for one man to own an ox in this day was like owning one of the finest tractors ever made.
§ It is evident that lie came from a place of position and a place of elegance.
And he leaves all of this.
§ If you're not willing to forsake position in life, you'll never be a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.
§ You must leave whatever position God calls you to leave, if he calls you to leave it.
He may not.
B. But not only did he leave position, he left parents.
§ Jesus tells of the man in the New Testament who said let me first bid my parents goodbye.
§ Jesus forbade that man and Jesus said to that man, no man having put his hand to the plow and looketh back is fit for the kingdom of God.
§ But Elijah did not forbid Elisha.
Why?
Because he knew Elisha's heart.
§ There's nothing wrong with being kind and sweet to your father and your mother.
§ *Luke 14:26-27* "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
27 "And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.”
§ Jesus uses hyperbole.
Our love for Him must be so strong in comparison.
§ The fact is the more we love Jesus the more we love our families.
§ But we cannot truly love anybody until we do love Jesus, and place Him first.
§ Are you willing for that?
Are you willing to say Jesus Christ will come first before my possession, before my parents and my earthly relationships, and before my position
C. Liking or disliking has nothing to do with it.
We have orders to go and therefore, we must go.
§ A missionary was asked, do you like this work that you're doing?
He said no.
My wife and I don't like dirt.
We don't like crawling into vile huts through goat refuse.
We don't like associating with ignorant, filthy and brutish people.
§ But then the missionary said this.
Is a man to do nothing for Christ that he does not like?
§ Love constrains us.
It's not a matter of whether you like it or not.
There is a price to pay.
§ Have you given all to Jesus Christ?
Jesus said, if you don't, you cannot be my disciple.
III.
There is a plan to pursue.
(1 Kings 19:15-16)
A. While Elisha was out there plowing the field, God had already spoken to Elijah about him.
§ God had a plan for his life even when Elisha didn't know it.
§ God has a plan for everyone's life.
§ To be a disciple means to find that plan and get it on it.
There is a plan to pursue.
§ You may be unaware of God's plan for your life, just as Elisha was unaware of God's plan for him.
§ But the thing that made Elisha the prophet of miracles is that he found the plan of God and obeyed.
§ Did you know that God has a plan for everyone of you?
B. Did you know that your plan is just as sacred to God and just as important as Elisha’s plan.
§ Jesus Christ said you've not chosen me, but I've chosen you and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit and that your fruit should remain.
§ *Ephesians 2:10* For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
§ Did you know that God has already before ordained the way that you should go?
§ *Psalm 37:23* The steps of a /good /man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way.
§ God had before ordained a plan for Elisha's life.
And God has before ordained a plan for your life.
§ Are you interested in finding the will of God for your life?
