What is revival?
Do we need a revival/renewal today?
What is the the Nature of Revival
Scripture indicates that a number of characteristics precede revival, they make up the nature of revival - which involve repentance, humility and obedience.
Characteristics which precede revival (There are 5 we are going to look at this morning)
God’s people long for renewal in their lives
Psalm 80:3 NKJV
3 Restore us, O God; Cause Your face to shine, And we shall be saved!
Psalm 80:7 NKJV
7 Restore us, O God of hosts; Cause Your face to shine, And we shall be saved!
Psalm 80:17–18 NKJV
17 Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand, Upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself. 18 Then we will not turn back from You; Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.
Psalm 85:6 NKJV
6 Will You not revive us again, That Your people may rejoice in You?
So God’s people need to have a longing for renewal...
The second characteristic that precedes revival is...
God’s people experience a new awareness of sin
Psalm 32:3–5 NKJV
3 When I kept silent, my bones grew old Through my groaning all the day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah 5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah
Psalm 51:1–10 NKJV
1 Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. 4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. 6 Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me hear joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken may rejoice. 9 Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
God’s people long for renewal of their lives
God’s people experience a new awareness of sin
The third characteristic that precedes revival is...
God’s people must repent
2 Chronicles 7:14 NKJV
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
God’s people long for renewal of their lives
God’s people experience a new awareness of sin
God’s people must repent of their sins
The forth characteristic that precedes revival is...
God’s people need to be humble
Isaiah 57:15 NKJV
15 For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
What is true humility?
means “low status” it doesnt mean to think less of yourself (self esteem) but to think of yourself less often.
What does God mean when He says to revive the heart of the contrite one?
The word contrite means to be crushed into powder. A stony hard spirit brought to ashes, lowly in spirit. Humility and contriteness go hand in hand.
Do you posses these characteristics?
Are you longing for renewal of your lives?
Are you experiencing a new awareness of sin?
Are you willing to repent of your sins?
Are you humble before the Lord?
Next week will explore the Characteristic results of revival
