Discussion

Last week we discussed this passage from the “calling” perspective, this week we are looking at the “commission” perspective of this passage. One of the easiest things that we can do, is become to familiar with words and forget what they mean. How would you define the word, “commission”?
Scott stated, “The reason that we exist at Grace Community Church, is to worship God, and talk to people.” Why is it so important to have a “mission” statement, or a understanding of why you exist?
In ; we see that the Disciples, saw Jesus, worshiped Jesus, took the command of Jesus. In today’s culture we can say we see Jesus at church, we can worship Jesus at church, but how do you personally obey the commands / commission of Jesus? (Worship should fuel our mission)
Read How have you viewed the “authority” of Christ in your life? Does it come before or after your busy schedule or prorities?
In , and also ; what do these passages say about Christ authority? (Given by God the Father)
Read Philippians
Scott stated, “The fact that Jesus has been given all authority he can command us to go to all nations, this is not a right, this is a commission.” How do you see this command of Christ played out in your lives today?
Scott stated that, “He does not have a the right or authority to change the calling or commission of the church.” How do you live out your commission, and are there things in your life, that you see that come before your commission from Christ?
In the west we tend to read, “make disciples of all nations” as short term mission trips or other countries, but how would they have heard this in Jesus time?
What were some of the things that were occuring at this time in History, that would have made the disciples want to turn inward, rather then outward in their mission?
Do you generally take a defensive, or a offensive approach to the Lord’s command?
Scott stated, “The congregation that loses this vision of Christ sending us out, loses its mission, and will die out.” Read , what are things in your life that tempt you to keep your life, rather then step out under the authority of Christ?
Scott stated, “We do not impose our values, thoughts, and feeling on other people.” reminding us, that it is not about us, but about the Lordship of Christ. Why is this so important to remember?

Closing Thoughts

I could not write out fast enough all that Scott stated at the end, but here are the highpoints of Grace Community Church:
We acknowledge Christ Lordship
We acknowledge the grace of God in the calling.
We go out into our city.
We go to those whom God has called.
