The Power of Separation
John 16:4–15 ESV
But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Introduction
ILL- Hot Tamales- some of them are Mike and Ikes that were messed up. They are given cinnamon and red food coloring and they become Hot Tamales.
World= evil system in place since the fall of man.
Followers of Jesus
They’ve been called to be in the world but not of the world.
Now they are told they will do it without Jesus.

5 Ways Holy Spirit Helps Us

Continuation of Jesus (4-7)

To your advantage= being filled with spirit is greater than being with Jesus.
Jesus became man- limits of a man.
Holy Spirit is omnipresent and can be in everyone at once.
The Holy Spirit is a continuation of Jesus being on earth but in a superior way.

Conviction of Sin (8-9)

Conviction is a judicial term= been found guilty.
ILL- Handwriting on the Wall
Belshazzar, King of Babylon, son of Neuchadnezzar- used Temple utensils for a wild party.
Hand Writes- Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin
Mene= your kingdom days are numbered.
Tekel= you've been weighed and found wanting.
Peres= kingdom is divided.
BUT Because of grace conviction has a purpose: repentance. Conviction brings to light that which you have done wrong. Conviction is not the punishment. It is when God yells in our soul that we have sinned. It is that which causes us to realize when we are wrong and need to repent.
Shows the need of Jesus.
Salvation is by belief in Jesus.
A person has to know they are a sinner before they realize they need to be saved.

Revelation of Righteousness (10)

What does seeing Jesus have to do with righteousness?
Jesus is the standard of righteousness.
This goes with conviction of sin.
Righteousness is the standard of holiness.
ILL- you don’t prove a counterfeit bill by looking at other counterfeit bills but by comparing to the real thing.
He is the light.
He is the standard of holiness that everyone must measure themselves to.
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11  no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12  All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
Romans 3:10–12 ESV
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
Holy Spirit reveals holiness.
Unless you are drawn by holy spirit.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
John 6:44 ESV
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16 “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:14–16 ESV
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Condemnation of Judgment (11)

The world system we live in, but not of, is a fallen system.
Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.
John 12:31 ESV
Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.
He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Colossians 2:15 ESV
He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
Jesus has won but he waits for the time to take what is his.
He tarries in order to wait for our salvation.
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
2 Peter 3:9 ESV
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Declaration of Truth (12-15)

Holy Spirit is our guide.
ILL- horse-backing in Wyoming in the Mountains.
The guide is paramount in survival.
Holy Spirit provides truth- truth that is light in the midst of darkness.
Holy Spirit is the flashlight that shows us our way in the dark.
12-13 The disciples needed more information- but they could not take it at this point.
This is not more revelation but more understanding of that he had revealed.
= the holy spirit reminds. =
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
John 14:26 ESV
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
13- truth is not independent of Jesus.
The truth is a guide for us on how to live in the world.
13- “declare to you the things that are to come”
give you light in the difficult days ahead.
sometimes even showing you prophetically what is to come.
This happens with John on Island of Patmos.
14-15
Holy Spirit centers around Jesus.
Holy Spirit is personal- masculine pronoun, not neuter pronoun.
all 3 persons of the trinity are personal and have one purpose.
Jesus’ mission was to glorify the Father, The Holy Spirits mission is to glorify Jesus.
The Holy Spirit is the deliverer of the message that was given to us by the disciples.
This is all about God- not just Jesus or Holy Spirit or even Father
There are not 3 Gods. There is only One.
CONCLUSION
How can we live with purpose in a world that hates us? With the Holy Spirit.
How do we receive the Holy Spirit? By accepting the Son, Jesus, as the payment of our sin.

Are you part of the world or separate from the world?
