The Raising of Lazarus

john 11:
John 11:40–44 NASB95
Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. “I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.” When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.” The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
Among the great claims made by Jesus was the claim that he could raise the dead and give life
John 5:21 NASB95
“For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.
in a dramatic way in the presence of many witnesses, he demonstrated his ability to do this in the raising of Lazarus. In one of the most compelling accounts of the Gospel of John, we see Jesus take on Satan and the power of death.

IT WAS A DEMONSTRATION OF THE GLORY OF GOD

glory occurs 40 x’s in the Gospel of John and is a key word or concept in this gospel.
John 1:14 NASB95
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 2:11 NASB95
This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
the ultimate glorification of course will be when Jesus raised form the dead
John 7:39 NASB95
But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
John 7:
John 12:23 NASB95
And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
John 11:4 NASB95
But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.”
John specifically said that this event was going to glorify God, and even more so glorify His Son!

IT WAS AN INDESCRIBABLE GIFT OF LOVE TO MARY AND MARTHA

in all probability Lazarus was the bread winner and the one who protected and cared for his sisters. John fully developed the sorrow these sisters had for their brother. the degree of their sorrow would fail in comparison to the joy of seeing their brother live
John 11:3 NASB95
So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
John 11:5 NASB95
Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
John 11:33 NASB95
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,
John 11:35–36 NASB95
Jesus wept. So the Jews were saying, “See how He loved him!”
John 11:35 NASB95
Jesus wept.

IT WAS TESTIMONY TO THE POWER OF JESUS

Jesus says a public prayer in order to firmly establish that which was about to take place was through the power of God.
john has thoroughly developed the theme that the works of Jesus prove God’s witness of jesus
John 5:36 NASB95
“But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.
John 11:42 NASB95
“I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.”
John 10:37–38 NASB95
“If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”
If jesus can call the forth Lazarus and he raises from the dead don’t you think that when the day comes he can call all from the grave
John 5:25–28 NASB95
“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. “For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. “Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
,

WAS PROOF THAT JESUS IS THE RESURRECTION AND LIFE

As is typical in the book of John Jesus makes an “i am” statement followed by a sign or proof that he is that “I am “
here he substantiates his claim. Jesus overwhelmingly proves that he is the resurrection and life.
John 11:25–26 NASB95
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Jesus 11:25-26
Jesus has the power to bring those who are physically dead back to life
all those powers of satan, especially seen in death, are so easily crushed by Jesus.
Hebrews 2:14 NASB95
Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
1 Corinthians 15:54–56 NASB95
But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory. “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;
1 Cor. 15
death does not end ones existence.
Jesus is life spiritually!
John 1:4 NASB95
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.
John 5:26 NASB95
“For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;
John 5:24 NASB95
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
only Jesus can give eternal life. No other Lord or Savior can do this.
John 14:
John 14:6 NASB95
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

WHO DOES HE GIVE THIS LIFE TOO

John 11:25–26 NASB95
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
John 11:26 NASB95
and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
John 5:24 NASB95
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
John
John 1:12 NASB95
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
John 3:
John 3:36 NASB95
“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
John 6:35 NASB95
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
John 6:40 NASB95
“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
