The book of Leviticus means “pertaining to the Levites.” 3rd book of the Pentateuch which means the “first five books”
The Author of the book of Leviticus is the same as the Torah or Pentateuch which is Moses.
Don’t be intimidated by liberal scholars. JEDP different group of people that supposedly wrote the first five books.
Jesus in
gave testimony to Moses writing the first five books.
KJV 1900 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Jesus is the strongest testimony for Moses as the author.
The book of Exodus and Leviticus are books of instruction of how to worship in the wilderness.
The Tabernacle was the main mobile place of worship.
The Tabernacle was centrally located in the center of Israel’s Encampment.
The Priest would receive all the offerings.
The first three offerings were voluntary and the last two were involuntary.
This is the Fourth of five offerings mentioned.
The first was the burnt offering. The Burnt offering was voluntary not forced. The Burnt offering was an act of dedication. The Burnt offering was not shared but wholly consumed by fire. It was not limited by money or size. The offering was living and killed for the payment of sin … atonement.
The second was the Meal offering. It was grain that was to be offered in a certain way with some specific ingredients omitted and some that were to be added. This was a voluntary offering an act of dedication but unlike the previous offering was all about the living. The different ingredients symbolized different things.
The third was the Peace offering. It was an offering to be offered that was focused on peace. It was about communion. The sacrifice was given to God first, then the priest and finally the family. All were to come together in an act of fellowship and peace. We can only have peace through Jesus Christ.
Key Phrases in Leviticus One: “and the Lord called” showing his sovereignty in communicating with Israel through Moses. “sweet savour unto the Lord.” three times in 9,13,17. God was well pleased by this offering.
Key Phrase in Leviticus Two: “These are the regulations for the fellowship offering a person may present to the Lord.”
Fee and Stuart’s book … How to Read the Bible Book by Book. “The sacrifices share 3 lessons that teach us about the covenant relationship Israel has with God.
1. The offering is a gift from the Israelite to the covenant keeping God.
2. The offering reveals the desire for fellowship between the worshipper and God.
3. The offering acts as a mending of the torn relationship between the worshipper and God through atonement.
The Sin Offering
Sin comes when we take a perfectly natural desire or longing or ambition and try desperately to fulfill it without God. Not only is it sin, it is a perverse distortion of the image of the Creator in us. All these good things, and all our security, are rightly found only and completely in him.
Augustine, The Confessions of Saint Augustine.
What is Sin? Anything we think, say, or do that breaks God’s commandments.
Unlike the previous three offerings these offerings were voluntold not volunteered.
The nation had to give this offering for unintentional sin committed. There was no provision for willful sinfulness.
makes you wonder how seriously does God take sin.
All anyone could do was come for MERCY. Psalm 51:16-17
Jesus is our sin offering to atone for our sin whether willful or in ignorance.
The Priest had to bring a offering just like the entire nation (congregation). 3,14
Higher the position the more the responsibility and accountability.
The Offering had to be brought by faith. 20,26,31,35
The Great High Priest Jesus made the greatest offering of himself.
Hebrews 10:1-14
The sacrifice under the old covenant brought a reminder of sin not the remission of sin.
We can have confidence that we have a righteous standing before God because of the Sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us.
No more sacrifices are needed.
A man purchased a white mouse to use as food for his pet snake. He dropped the unsuspecting mouse into the snake's glass cage, where the snake was sleeping in a bed of sawdust. The tiny mouse had a serious problem on his hands. At any moment he could be swallowed alive. Obviously, the mouse needed to come up with a brilliant plan.
What did the terrified creature do? He quickly set up work covering the snake with sawdust chips until it was completely buried. With that, the mouse apparently thought he had solved his problem.
The solution, however, came from outside. The man took pity on the silly little mouse and removed him from the cage. No matter how hard we try to cover or deny our sinful nature, it's fool's work. Sin will eventually awake from sleep and shake off its cover. Were it not for the saving grace of the Master's hand, sin would eat us alive.
