It’s homecoming week in our community! We have rallies, bonfires, parades, football, powder-puff, a dance and so much more. Essentially the community is excited for the events that are occuring, especially the younger crowd! I looked into the origin and purpose of homecoming… typically it revolves around a high-school or college where there is a welcoming back of members of that community or alumni, those who once participated in the events now come to cheer on those of the younger crowd. There is a remembrance and a looking forward, a coming together of people who share a common passion and likeness.
This got me thinking about our homecoming that will take place in Heaven someday… all of God’s people coming together. All of us celebrating the victory we have in Jesus Christ. Reunited with members of God’s family. More importantly for today though I contemplated what Hebrews states about those who have gone before us… they went through the hard days, difficult times of grief and sadness. They saw the joys of seeing God do the amazing and miraculous, they exhibited for us a faith we can learn from.
They still have a role in what God is doing now, the events He is orchestrating for His glory… do you know what their part is??? They come together, celebrate what God is doing and they cheer!!! Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.
Hebrews 12:1–2 NLT
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
Maybe you have the opportunity this homecoming to be participating in the events, or maybe you are finding yourself in the stands cheering. Wherever it is let’s be encouraged to think of those who have gone before us… they made it through, so can we… and as God gives opportunity in our lives today, let’s practice cheering one another along as well.
Have a blessed day and GO Grand Valley Cardinals!!!
