E. Context
II. BODY
A. The Spiritual Gift of Leading
a. The Supernatural empowering by the Holy Spirit for the ministry of presiding or attending to
1. lead here commonly translated: rule
2. literally: “to stand before,” indicating care & diligence
3. This is as much a spiritual gift as any of the others we have discussed
i. It takes the H.S.’s empowering 2 selflessly lead in a way that honor’s Christ!
to stand before,” hence, “to lead, attend to” (indicating care and diligence
i. though a different word, Paul may have in mind the same gift in...
28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.
Administrating here means to steer or pilot a ship
b. Paul (Probably) has in mind elders & pastors here
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.
1. The early church seemed a lot less concerned w/titles & far more concerned w/function & empowerment
2. the elder/preacher/teacher rules & is same word as “lead” in
i. it’s expected, then, that the spirit empowered leader would preside & attend to the people effectively…& so should rec. generous compensation (not a shameless plug 4 a raise)
-brings us back to our main text: ro 12:8 that says “the one who leads, with zeal”
c. Spirit empowered leaders should do so with
1. zeal defined as:
though a different word, Paul may have in mind the same gift in 1 cor 12:28…he has a list & as we come 2 the end we find administrating
take a look...
28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.
Administrating here means to steer or pilot a ship
(why 1st, second, 3rd, then, then, etc?)
