Mark 14:66–72 CSB
66 While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s maidservants came. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.” 68 But he denied it: “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about.” Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed. 69 When the maidservant saw him again, she began to tell those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean.” 71 Then he started to curse and swear, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!” 72 Immediately a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

I. Peter was not Jesus.

Mark 14:53–54 CSB
53 They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes assembled. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the servants, warming himself by the fire.

A. Scripture purposely highlights the weakness of peter.

Mark 14:66–68 CSB
66 While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s maidservants came. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.” 68 But he denied it: “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about.” Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.
Illus: Looking back all the way from 14:27 forward, mark purposely parallels Peter’s story with Jesus.
He wants you to compare the two men. He wants you to the see the utter weakness and failures of both men.
Looking at them from three stories, the garden, the arrest, and the trial before the Sanhedrin.
In the garden Peter makes the bold prediction that he would not fall away from Jesus… to which he then falls asleep three times.
At Jesus arrest, Peter falls into the trap of trusting the worlds ways to accomplish God’s plans.
In Jesus’ trial, the story of peter hits it’s climax having peter not just deny jesus, but curse Jesus and abandon him.
Why is this important… we cannot understand the fullness of God’s grace towards us, unless we understand our condition first.
Just walk with me and place yourself in Peter’s shoes....
Mark 14:27–42 CSB
27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will fall away, because it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. 28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 Peter told him, “Even if everyone falls away, I will not.” 30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31 But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with you, I will never deny you.” And they all said the same thing. 32 Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he told his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 He said to them, “I am deeply grieved to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.” 35 He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, “Abba, Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.” 37 Then he came and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 Once again he went away and prayed, saying the same thing. 40 And again he came and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to him. 41 Then he came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come. See, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up; let’s go. See, my betrayer is near.”

B. Scripture purposely highlights the faithfulness of Christ.

Mark 14:69–71 CSB
69 When the maidservant saw him again, she began to tell those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean.” 71 Then he started to curse and swear, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
mk 14:
Illus: We’ve dealt with peter, but his story is also paralleled with the story of Jesus.
Where peter fell asleep in the garden 3 times, Jesus submitted to the will of God.
As peter denied denied Jesus 3 times, Jesus was accused 3 times at his trial.
It highlights what paul says… while we were still helpless, sinners, enemies, Christ died for us.
The fullness of God’s gift in Christ for us is best understood by looking to Peter’s failures, and CHrist’s faithfulness.
Mark 14:43–65 CSB
43 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 His betrayer had given them a signal. “The one I kiss,” he said, “he’s the one; arrest him and take him away under guard.” 45 So when he came, immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 They took hold of him and arrested him. 47 One of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his ear. 48 Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a criminal, to capture me? 49 Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then they all deserted him and ran away. 51 Now a certain young man, wearing nothing but a linen cloth, was following him. They caught hold of him, 52 but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked. 53 They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes assembled. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the servants, warming himself by the fire. 55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they could not find any. 56 For many were giving false testimony against him, and the testimonies did not agree. 57 Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, stating, 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’ ” 59 Yet their testimony did not agree even on this. 60 Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, “Don’t you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you?” 61 But he kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “Why do we still need witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy. What is your decision?” They all condemned him as deserving death. 65 Then some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to beat him, saying, “Prophesy!” The temple servants also took him and slapped him.

II. Peter’s failures help us to understand grace of God.

mk 14:
Mark 14:71 CSB
71 Then he started to curse and swear, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”

A. Peter highlights the grace of God, forgiving us in the midst of our sin.

Mark 14:71 CSB
71 Then he started to curse and swear, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
Illus: After Jesus’s death and resurrection, Jesus could have thought, well he denied me, I’m leaving it to him to make things right.
But Jesus pursued Peter. More than that, for every time he fell asleep, every time he denied him, Jesus restored Peter.
That is how we understand our forgiveness. Jesus pursues us. Jesus forgives us for EVERY time we fail. He does not leave us alone to get things right, but finds us, and restores us.
It is important to see peter’s story unfold, because in peter’s story we find our story.
Watch as peter and your story unfolds...
1 Peter 1:3–4 CSB
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.
John 21:15–19 CSB
15 When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said to him, “you know that I love you.” “Feed my lambs,” he told him. 16 A second time he asked him, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” he said to him, “you know that I love you.” “Shepherd my sheep,” he told him. 17 He asked him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved that he asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” “Feed my sheep,” Jesus said. 18 “Truly I tell you, when you were younger, you would tie your belt and walk wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will tie you and carry you where you don’t want to go.” 19 He said this to indicate by what kind of death Peter would glorify God. After saying this, he told him, “Follow me.”

B. There is no place so far that repentance and grace is not available.

Mark 14:71 CSB
71 Then he started to curse and swear, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
Illus: It is essential to see the passage of Peter’s denial as parallel to Jesus trail and convictions.
If Peter’s story stood by itself then it would be one of the most broken stories in scripture.
But peter’s story lines up with the theme of all of scripture: Men who exposed the sinful and broken condition of humanity. No hero was good enough… all failed. Jesus is different.
Jesus embraced death as peter fell asleep. Jesus embraced his claim to messiaship as peter denied Christ. The story of peter’s denial is the story of Jesus’ faithfulness.
As peter reflected back to who Jesus is, listen to his words.

III. Peter’s denial helps us to understand the power of the Holy Spirit.

Mark 14:71–72 CSB
71 Then he started to curse and swear, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!” 72 Immediately a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

A. The Holy spirit changes everything for Peter.

Illus: Most of our lesson tonight was about Jesus’ victory in Peter’s failure. It was about grace, mercy and forgiveness. BUT, there was a moment in peter’s life when he was transformed.
Peter experienced God’s forgiveness and grace from the cross when Jesus forgave him… but he became a new person when the spirit inhabited him.
Peter’s story is our story. We are Peter in the garden falling asleep, we are with him in denying Jesus, and we are with him as CHrist restores us. Once Jesus forgives us, we become new just like peter gaining the Holy Spirit.
This is how Peter’s story ends…
Acts 2:22–24 CSB
22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to these words: This Jesus of Nazareth was a man attested to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through him, just as you yourselves know. 23 Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him. 24 God raised him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by death.
Acts 2:36 CSB
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
acts 2:
Acts 2:37–40 CSB
37 When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what should we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!”
