1 Corinthians 6:19–20 ESV
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

[SLIDE 5]
Earlier - the church as a whole is God's temple but here - body is singular. Each believer is a temple where God dwells.
Sacred shrine, the sanctuary
The Spirit living in us is a gift from God. As a temple, we belong to God.
Given dignity because God chose to live in us - contrast with believe that the body is bad, evil; only spirit/soul is good)
The whole of our lives has been given dignity (contrast with believe that the body is bad, evil; only spirit/soul is good). Nothing else other than God's choosing to live in us can give that kind of dignity.
-Wherever we go, we bear the spirit of God.
Wherever we go, whatever we do, we bear the spirit of God.
Here, Paul specifically dives into sexual conduct as his primary application but this has far wider implications.

20 - These Sacred Bodies Were Worth Christ’s Sacrifice

20 - Why? we were bought at a price. Christ gave his life; redemption.

Bought With a Price

In that day, a servant/slave would save the price of his freedom, pay it into the temple treasury of a god, and then be purchased by the deity.
Released to live
Technically, he or she was the slave of the god, but in society, free.
There isn't enough we could save for our freedom. Christ came and took care of it. We belong to him who paid for our freedom and brought us to the place of being free.
There isn't enough we could save for our freedom. Christ came and took care of it. We belong to him who paid for our freedom and brought us to the place of being free.
He bought us to be his own. We belong to him.
He bought us to be his own. We belong to him.

[SLIDE 6] Glorifying God In Your Body: 2 Reasons Why It’s Critical

[SLIDE 6A] It Shows What We Think About God

Doxazo - Glorify/Praise; Form or hold an opinion;
Opinion. What I think and what others think about me.
A good standing or reputation; honor
To be glorified or honored is to be thought well of; I have a good opinion of you.
How we treat our bodies shows our opinion of God.
How we treat our bodies contributes to what others will think about God. IT’S OUR WITNESS
Disciples of Jesus give honor to God in the way we care for our physical bodies because he redeemed them, lives in them, and they belong to him.
Taking care of what belongs to God is on the same level as bearing spiritual fruit. More important than anything we can accomplish for him.
-Why This Matters: His mercy ; he deserves it

Disease

Why This Matters: His mercy ; he deserves it
Wording here: honor him quickly so that it is already done. It’s that important.
Disciples of Jesus give honor to God in the way we care for our physical bodies because he redeemed them, lives in them, and they belong to him.
Obligation: honor God with our bodies.

[SLIDE 6B] Physical Health is Critical to Spiritual Health

Physical Health is Critical to Spiritual Health

Health - ;
Wellbeing, free from disease physically, emotionally - not just spiritually.
; ;
Good health - being free from bodily or mental disease
- complete health; all the body parts are healthy and fit for use
Freshness - alert and refreshed state
(Apocrypha; Hebrew wisdom literature)
Better tp be poor, healthy and fit than rich and afflicted in body.
Health and fitness are better than any gold; a robust body than countless riches
There is no wealth better than health of body and no gladness above joy of heart.
-Emotional health
-Physical health
-Not just spiritual health

[SLIDE 7C] Work/Rest and Recovery

Balance work and rest
Exodus 20:8–11 ESV
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
