10-6-19 Church Covenant #3
Ephesians 5:1-17
Church Covenant #3: “We will seek to live in holiness before God and integrity before men by abstaining from evil, being honest in our dealings with others, being faithful in our social and civic responsibilities, and by doing good works.”
Holiness and God (vs1-2)
Our call to be holy is because God Himself is holy.
When we get a glimpse of God’s holiness, we see that we are not as
He is.
It took Jesus’ sacrifice to make us right with holy God.
The outcome of what God has done for us is a desire for holiness.
Away from Darkness (vs3-8)
As children of light our attitude should be to turn from darkness.
(Jude 23, Hebrews 12:4)
Common areas of darkness that tempt us are speech, immorality, and greed.
The idea of sin being acceptable is nothing but deception.
Children of light cannot tolerate darkness that brings the wrath of God.
To the Light (vs8-17)
Holiness is not just about what we are turning from, but what we are turning to.
Holiness means a separation from the world’s way of living by actively doing what shows God’s heart/character.
Because of the darkness, we must be careful to take opportunities to shine the light.
