Wherefore Hath the Lord Smitten Us
And the word of Samuel came to all Israel.
Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines?
Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
I want you to know what is going on here we are ending the time of the judges they are now in the land but there is no king and every man is doing that which is right in his own eyes
Eli is now the judge and the philistines had now recovered themselves from the losses given them by Samson.
Now Samuel is being established as the prophet and this is going to be Good for Israel.
And If they are going to overcome them this is the time.
Right here before things are clear who is in charge Elia is 98 years old but he did not turn it over yet All Israel knew it was going to be Samuel but it was not yet.
The devil knew they had but a short time.
SO they go out and fight them.
This battle is taking place twenty miles from Shiloh to the west
Between ebenezer and aphek Apheck means strength

Israel goes out here to battle against them.
And this is a pretty big battle.
I don't know how many either side had but I do know Israel lost 4000 thousand men that day
And as we read the second time they lost 30,000
That is a massive war
To put that into perspective
4,414 Allied personnel killed on D-Day.
These include 2,501 from the USA, 1,449 British dead, 391 Canadians and 73 from other Allied countries.
Total German losses on D-Day (not just deaths, but also wounded and prisoners of war) are estimated as being between 4,000 and 9,000.
156,000 allied troops by land sea and air.
This is a massive battle
And the first battle they lost
And they asked a very important question.
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines?
That is the right question.
You see they recognized it was not the philistines that smote them the recognized it was the Lord.
When we are defeated at times it is good to recognize it was the Lord that messed up our plans
It was the Lord that allowed us to fail or dare I say wanted us to fail or could we even say make us fail.
Look what it says about the Philistines they joined the battle in verse 2
I believe that means engaged but I do think there could be a little more to that the Lord was already against them and they just helped the Lord out there.
I want you to see they asked the question but they did not pause for the answer
They did not get the answer
And without any information to that question
They went and got the most important national treasure they had both as their identity as a nation and the most important thing spiritually they had as a people and took that to battle and lost that.
Listen if you are losing the battle do not go get the most precious thing you have and take that to battle.
But here is what I want to say to you
The reason they lost the battle the first time and lost 4000 is the same reason they lost the battle the second time and lost 30,000
If you do not learn from the Lord on round one round two is even worse.
Round one costs round two crushes
Round one is defeating round two is devastating.
If God has given you reprieve.
Then find out what does failure is about before you plunge into battle again.
So what we are going to do this morning is attempt to answer that question.
They could have gotten the answer.
There was enough revealed Truth for them to get the answer
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines?
We all fail and I'm not saying this morning that the reason you failed the reason I failed or the reason we failed is because of these reasons.
I'm also not saying for sure that it was God.
I know it was God here.
But what I am saying that if these things are in your life you will fail.
A Failure of Leadership
And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.
In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
What The Lord says to Samuel you are about to be the Leader I am going to speak through you
Look at vs 19 -21
And before you get installed as a leader I am going to clean up this mess and give you a fresh start
And it is so bad that when i take care of it and people hear about it their ears are going to tingle.
When you get hit in the head and your ears start ringing from a loud shocking noise
Or sometimes when I hear or see something shocking I will hear a little valve go off in my ear and the room will start getting faint and I will hear this ringing in my ear.
Only happens a few times but it was brought on by utter shock to my emotions and my security
And that was what he was talking about
This battle.

He knew what was going on and did nothing about it.
He failed to hold them accountable and the Lord allowed the nation to suffer for the failure of leadership.
Eli was a judge his job was to execute judgment and say what was wrong and hold people accountable.
And The lord gave him opportunity to do it.
Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.
They were children of the devil they were not of the Lord and he let them have a job of helping other people sacrifice to the Lord
They were of the devil
And the priests' custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself.
So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.
Also before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
You see he was taking it for himself before that person ever got to give it to the Lord The Lord said all the fat is the Lords they were supposed to give that to the Lord but they said we are going to take it
Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.
That caused people to hate the offering of the Lord and not to bring it
It corrupts the most important thing to put them in a right standing before God
And Eli did not protect the most important thing.
He did not make them follow direct orders from God.
Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
And he said unto them, Why do ye such things?
for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.
The Lord asked eve what is this that hast thou done.
He asked cain what hast thou done.
You ask why because you are looking for a reason to excuse it
