I thought this evening we would take some time and think about some of the prayers of Jesus.
We have looked at prayers a lot through the years, but mainly on the idea of How to pray, why we should pray, and so forth.
But today, this evening I thought we might take some time to examine just how Jesus prayed at different times in His life.
And from this we might develop a better understanding of how we can pray at different times in our life as well.
So let me give you these 5 topics and then we will go back and examine each one.
Handfuls on Purpose for Christian Workers and Bible Students, Series I–XIII The Five Recorded Occurrences of Our Lord Praying
1. At His Baptism,
Luke 3:21
2. On the Mount of Transfiguration,
Luke 9:28
3. When Choosing His Disciples,
Luke 6:12
4. When the Jews Sought to Kill Him,
John 12:27
5. In Gethsemane,
Luke 22:42
So we will take some time and go through each one and gain a little bit more understanding as to what He is doing in each one of these examples.
1. At His Baptism
1. At His Baptism
21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened,

The baptism of Jesus is important for us to consider, for one it reminds us that not only was Jesus baptised but He commanded all His followers to be baptised as well, participating in the same action He had done as well.
Listen to Matthew
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Jesus being baptised was important that it set him aside, distinguishing Him from sinners in that regard that He was indeed different from the world and as He was being baptized we see that Jesus is praying there. He is communing with the Father and the Holy Spirit as the Second person of the Trinity, the Son.
And after praying we find that God shows up and speaks, the Holy Spirit comes in the form of a dove and suddenly we find the triune God there in our midst.
Can you imagine how wonderful this experience would be… So Jesus prayed at this moment in His life..
Q-
At what moments do you tend to pray more often than others??
2. On the Mount of Transfiguration -
2. On the Mount of Transfiguration -
More often than we think perhaps we find that Jesus would steal away to quiet place to pray, often up in the mountains away from people. But this day would be different for those three disciples Peter, James and John.
Listen to
28 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray.

Jesus often takes these three with Him into special places and opportunities, but this day as Jesus is praying we see that Elijah and Moses appear and Wow.. the disciples, those three are amazed at what they witness.
More than just the power and opportunity to pray, but that Jesus is transformed before them.
His appearance was altered as he prayed… I think the more time we spend with God our appearance and countenance changes…
His appearance was altered as he prayed… I think the more time we spend with God our appearance and countenance changes…
Do you remember Moses up on the Mountain with God, and when he came down His face glowed with the glory of God.
Jesus prays and in changes and I think we do as well. we may not glow with the glory of God like Jesus did this day, but our countenance is changed and we are better for it.
And while up on the mountain, we know that verse 35 says that God spoke ..
35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!”

This is the second time we know that God speaks in the gospels, .. We should pray and then listen to God.
Q-
Do you feel like your quiet time with God changes you ?
3. When Choosing His Disciples...
3. When Choosing His Disciples...
There is an important concept here, prayer releases wisdom and helps us know and do the will of God.
Have you ever considered that idea that praying brings about wisdom and the knowledge of His will for us.
12 In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.
12 In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles:

Jesus was up on the mountain praying, spending time with God before calling those men who the Lord would use for His glory.
Listen to Matthew 4.....
18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

These men had already been prepared by God and the Son was to seek them out to be used for the glory of God.
What does it teach us, that before major decisions we must spend a significant time in prayer asking God to help us do what is good and right for His glory.
Q.
Do you pray before making large decisions or do you stand on your own wisdom and training?
It is never enough?
4. Prayed for God to be gloried.
4. Prayed for God to be gloried.
Without a doubt Jesus faced difficult times. Not because the cross was in front of Him, no he faced difficulties from others who did not believe Him or the message He brought.
27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.
27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
But His entire purpose was to go to the cross, and He did pray f
In , Jesus is approaching the cross, it is the day before His arrest and his time in the upper room, Jesus is keenly aware the time of his passion is appreaoching, soon He will die for the sins of the world and He prayed for God to be gloried even at his own expense.
Do we ever pray, God do what ever with me as long as it brings you glory...
And then we come to the last time Jesus prays
5. In the Garden....
5. In the Garden....
Just a little while after they have left the upper room, we find that Jesus and his disciples have left the city and made their way to the Garden of Gethsemane. It is here that Jesus will leave 8 of his disciple to pray, just inside the gates of the olive garden.
He will take those 3, Peter, James and John a little farther inside the garden and ask them to pray.
He will go a stone throw farther and will pray in great earnest for the Father’s will to be done
Listen to ...
42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
He is preparing himself for the most difficult task in the world, it is not death and it is not death and torture before hand, it is taking the sins of the world upon His own body to be that ransom, that atonement for sin.
The one who knew no sin, would be made sin for us...
Jesus passion was a voluntary act, He says Nevertheless, not my will but yours...
Think of this if you will, this is the third time He has pulled those 3 out for something special
This is the third time He has shared a special occasion with these three men.
A. The first was when Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead (), He proved himself victorious over death
B. the second was when He was transfigured before them (). There must be a spiritual message here. He would be glorified through death… Moses and Elijah were talking about his exodus .... Listen to Luke account of the transfiguration...
31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
____________
He in the garden through prayer he has given himself over to death, no matter what, His desire is to see the Father glorified and mankind redeemed.
Prayer can teach us to give in, and allow God to even be glorified as we surrentder to him those areas of our life we do nto like to give into.. we want to claim them for our selves, but truly are His.
Prayer allows us to accomplish this in our lives.
Q. What is God trying to claim in your life and will you meet Him in prayer to talk and discuss what He truly desires for your life/
Prayer accomplishes much
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Twenty-Two: The Night They Arrested God (Luke 22:39–71)
This is the third time He has shared a special occasion with these three men. The first was when Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead (Luke 8:41–56), and the second was when He was transfigured before them (Luke 9:28–36). There must be a spiritual message here.
