– 2 The Testimony About Jesus
I. Intro: A. In this section of the Gospel of John...
Jesus is declared..
Jesus is followed
Jesus performs a miracle
And.. Jesus makes a statement..
++
B. These are the events which began His public ministry..
++
1.
2.
The previous study was about John the Baptist,
We see, in his ministry... how he was given all of this attention by society..
So that... ultimately, he could pass it right on to Jesus.
Tonight we pick up in the middle of John’s story.
++
II. / Jesus is declared / The testimony of John The Baptist
John 1:19–22 ESV
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

John 1:23–27 ESV
23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” 24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. John 1:28–31 ESV
28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”
24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Jn 1.28
John 1:32–34 ESV
32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

The main point of this passage, is to distinguish the herald from the person being announced..

Chad
The curiosity of these religious leaders gives us a record of these questions…
and It gives us a better opportunity to learn who this John The Baptist guy is.
++
(1) If he’s just some random kook... then he doesn’t bring validity to the story of Jesus..
b) But he is a valid part of the story...
(1) And he is declaring, according to the scriptures...
(a) ...the continuing revelation of The Gospel, which is also according to the scriptures...
++
a) The questions about Elijah
are a reference to
Malachi 4:5 ESV
5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
(ESV)
++
awesome day of the LORD comes.
(1) John declared that he was not Elijah.. (a) Or that... he didn’t understand or know if he was operating in the spirit of Elijah..
if he was operating in the spirit of Elijah..
(i) Jesus had something else to say on the matter.
++
(ESV) 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. (ESV) 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased.
Matthew 11:14 ESV
14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.

++ back to the Old Testament.
2. back to the Old Testament.
John is validated, because, like Jesus, his story links

(b) But rather... this Messiah would come to overthrow, and conquer.
Page 4 10/1/2015
(b) Whether John realized it or not isn’t significant...
(i) It was prophesied that Elijah would come to fulfill a specific purpose..
(a) And Jesus confirmed it...
So, John’s denial of being Elijah isn’t really significant..
b) They also asked if he was “the prophet”
(2)
(1)
Which refers back to ...
(a) ...speaking of a prophet that the people were commanded to listen to...
(i) He would speak God’s words and do what God commands him to do.
The Jews believed that this particular prophet would be an end times figure...
(a) And if John was this prophet..
(2)
(i) to follow..
Then the Messiah which was
(a) humility..
...did not come to die in
(b) Unfortunately for them... this was not going to be the case.
They had an expectation about the Messiah,
a) ...which Jesus was not going to satisfy...
(1) When we studied through some of the Major Prophets,
(a) We repeatedly saw how some Messianic prophecies looked quite different than others...
(i) In some, He would come in humility, and would suffer, as a lamb before the slaughter..
(ii) In others, He would come in power, and establish His Kingdom on earth..
(b) The scriptures were not contradicting....
(i) They were merely showing us that Jesus had a work to do... which was two-fold...
(a) He would first, come and conquer the spiritual affects of sin and death...
Page 5 10/1/2015
Chad
3.
(b) He would second... come, and conquer evil, and set up His reign for a thousand years.
Chad
4. I’m sure the Jews hoped that he would be their expectation of the prophet...
a) For that would validate their expectation for a Messiah..
(1) They were going to be disappointed.
B. John answered no to their inquiries about Elijah and about the prophet...
1.
Jesus would later affirm the Elijah part...
a) But for now, it was certain that John knew one thing about his mission.
(1) He was the voice of one crying out in the wilderness...
b)
(1)
(a) John went to the prophet Isaiah, and found his identity in chapter 40:3, and vs. 23.
He declared...
(a)
That he was merely a voice...
He was a man with a message..
Page 6 10/1/2015
(i) But, it wasn’t important to expound upon his identity...
(a) This is the man who would say, “I must decrease, He must increase.”
(b) For John.. it was about the mission, and the ministry..
(i) It wasn’t about himself.
Chad
1. The priests and scribes then wanted to know what the baptizing was all about.
a) In Judaism, baptism was a regular practice..
(1) A symbolic act of cleansing..
b) There were baptismals where people would walk in on one side, be fully submerged..
(1) And then walk out on the other side before entering the temple.
(a) Many of these baptismals still exist outside the temple walls in Jerusalem.
Page 7 10/1/2015
C. Since John wasn’t claiming the authoritative role of Elijah or Prophet...
2. The form of question that the Jews posed suggested that the rite of baptism was being understood in the sense of an official sign of authority.
a) John didn’t play into their hand...
(1) He didn’t claim any authority nor did he feel the need to defend himself.
D. He simply directed his answer back towards the Messiah...
Chad
1.
They asked... “under what authority do you do this?”
a)
(1)
He answered...
I’m merely baptizing with water..
(a) But there is one among you, that you do not know...
(i) I have no authority to baptize Him.
Basically... John was letting them know..
(a) He’s not concerned with the authority or the agenda of the Pharisees..
(i) He is concerned with the authority and the agenda of the Messiah.

E. The very next day, John saw Jesus, and declared to his disciples...
1. “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.. !”
2.
a) He explained to his disciples...
(1) This is the guy!!!
(2) John gave his testimony of seeing the Spirit fall
upon Him...
(a) And confirmed in his own conviction... that this was the son of God.
So, the very next day, when Jesus appeared again..
a) John declared it again.. (1) Behold the Lamb of God!
(a) The two disciples who were with him, responded immediately..
(i) They followed Jesus.
III. / Jesus is Followed / The testimony of the first disciples
(ESV) 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher),
Chad Page 9 10/1/2015
“where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
A. I love the quick response of the first two disciples..
Chad
a) The Holy Spirit had their attention...
(1) ...they were ready to respond when the call came..
Page 10 10/1/2015
1.
On day one, they found out who the Messiah was..
a) John’s ministry, was to direct people to Jesus..
(1) As soon as they learned who Jesus was... (a) They did not hesitate.
2. that these guys were already engaged and thinking about the idea of a coming Messiah..
As each disciple is called, we kind of get the impression
Page 11 of 20
(a) Even if the call came about a guy who was from Nazareth..
(i) Which initially made Nathanael skeptical.
Chad
B. This is how God often directs us...
1.
He plants the idea in our heads and in our hearts...
a) It doesn’t always have substance... form... or definition...
(1) But the idea is there... and we become a little discontent.
b) We get a sense... that something is going to happen..
(1) And we are being alerted to that mysterious something..
Then, as we process this through prayer...
2.
a)
(1) (2)
We begin to anticipate...
(a)
change..
(b)
on..
They knew they were on the cusp of Their rabbi was preparing them to move
Page 11 10/1/2015
We become hungry for clarity.. That’s where these two disciples of John were..
Chad
(1) He was skeptical... but he came, because he too was looking for a Messiah..
Page 12 10/1/2015
(i) They were being alerted to the change...
(3) They were anticipating the Messiah... and they were hungry for that truth to be revealed..
(a) When it was... they acted quick. 3. Andrew followed Jesus, and quickly went to get his
brother, Simon..
4.
a) When Simon showed up, Jesus immediately renamed him...
(1) And he became Peter... a name which means... stone, or pebble.
The next day, Philip was called...
a)
(1)
He quickly joined in...
Philip went to Nathanael..
(a) And told him... “We found the one that Moses and the prophets spoke of”
(i) We found the One, who came according to the scriptures..
When Nathanael found out that Jesus was from Nazareth..
b)
(a) Jesus showed Nathanael a little foresight,
(i) And he was immediately won over.
Chad
C. All of these guys were on the cusp... 1. They were talking... they were listening to John The
Baptist.. they were feeling a sense of urgency..
2.
When Jesus appeared..
a) God was moving, and they were looking for it.
a)
(1) (2)
b)
(1) But their calling as disciples of Jesus became their primary role...
Page 13 10/1/2015
They responded..
(a) (a)
Everything in their lives changed..
They had jobs.. they had families...
And all of a sudden..
Their focus changed..
This is not to say that they abandoned their families or their jobs..

IV. / Jesus Performs a Miracle / The testimony of the first miracle
(ESV) 2 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
A. Jesus performs several signs throughout His ministry...
Chad
1. Most of them are followed by a discourse by Jesus on a related theme.
a) This time, there is no discourse...
(1) No obvious lesson is given. Page 14 10/1/2015
Page 15 of 20
b) This miracle was not intended to convince sinners, reveal His power to critics, or prove a point...
(1)
This miracle had one specific purpose...
And it is given in vs. 11
Jesus manifested His glory, and His disciple believed.
(a) (b)
2. disciples already had in Him.
a) They believed He was the Messiah... the Son of God even..
This miracles was meant to affirm the faith that His

But now, they REALLY believed it.
(a) He revealed His glory.. (i) Remember... a word which
means ‘weight’..
(a) He revealed how ‘weighty’ His authority was...

of the cleansed temple

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty- six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
A. For his first appearance in Jerusalem as the Messiah, Jesus goes to the temple and makes a profound statement.
1. When it comes to the temple, this deed serves as bookends to His ministry..

1. He did not come to tell Old Covenant people they were wrong for obeying the Old Covenant.
a) Jesus wrote the law..
b) They were His instructions...
through His Father and by way of the Holy Spirit...
(1) They defied the law, and Jesus, the giver of the Law..
Page 17 10/1/2015
a) For on the day of His triumphant entry, just days before His Crucifixion..
(1) He does the same thing..
a) The animals should not have been in the temple..
b) They had turned it into a market atmosphere, and Jesus was denouncing that.
B. Don’t forget... Jesus did not come to denounce the law...
2. Moses... were blatantly disobeying the commands, the purpose, and the spirit of worship...
These Jews, who claimed to be so committed to
Page 18 of 20
(a) Took serious offense. 2. Everything they did in the Temple, when they did it
according to the scriptures...
a) Was intended to declare a message..
Chad
(1) (2)
(a)
If those messages were not declared properly..
...if they were believed incorrectly..
...then, when Jesus began the work of transforming and fulfilling the law..
(a) People were not going to get it. C. How they believed about the law..
1. Would determine how they were about the believe about Jesus.
2.
a) Jesus came to the center of Jewish worship..
(1) ...and he did it at a time when everyone was coming to town, to remember the Passover deliverance in Egypt...
He got a lot of attention..
a) And provoked a few questions..

2.
And Jesus gave one to them..
a) One which they could not understand..
(1) ...one which His disciples would not understand, until it happened.
Verse 22 jumps ahead to their ‘a-hah!’ moment.
a) This statement stuck with them... for 3 years...
1.
And people believed in Him..
a) But they believed, because they saw the signs..
(1) They were impressed... but this was the way of the masses..
(2) They believed... as long as they were entertained and fed..

VI. Questions:
A. The Jews were disappointed that Jesus was not the Messiah they were hoping for. How do we handle disappointment when things don’t work out in our lives the way we though they should? Do we ever expect God to do certain things in our lives... and actually does something else? How do we deal with that?
B. How do you know when to drop everything and follow? Have you gone through the process of being called to something and then, eventually, coming to the place where you obviously need to respond? What kind of confidence did you have?
1. What happens when we second guess ourselves, doubt our opportunities, and don’t respond?
C. How has God revealed Himself to you in ways that affirmed your faith?
D. If the Jews believed wrongly about the Old Covenant, they would struggle to believe correctly about the New Covenant. How can old and current beliefs hinder us from growing in God’s truth?
Chad Page 20 10/1/2015
(i) And Jesus became unpopular...
b) The fickle masses faded away.
