What is God saying to you?
What is God saying to you?
Intro: This is also recorded in H.W
This is a great portion of scripture. It is a great theological study and gets pretty deep. But that is not what I am going to do this morning. I want us to look at this event (not a vision) and get some practical things out of it.
1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.
1 And He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power.”
This is one on those verses in the Bible that some different views of what Jesus is saying. Some say He was talking about the 2nd coming of Jesus. That could not be.
a. He is speaking to Peter, James and John and what they are going to see Jesus in all His glory. And Moses and Elijah in glory also.
b. Jesus had just spoke of His death, they had a had time dealing with that. It would come to pass in just a few months. The reality of His death would be even more difficult. They would all scatter.
c. Peter the self proclaimed strong one would deny that He knew Him.
d. When Jesus spoke of the cross, it was difficult for them to handle. Jesus had spoke to them about them taking up their own cross. They all other then John would die a martyrs death. Suffer was coming, and they needed the strength to get though it. That is the main purpose for what they are about wittiness.
e. Peter had proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah. This was good news for them, Jesus the Messiah, and in their minds He would set up His kingdom and they would be a part of it.
f. But when Jesus started talking about rejection, suffering and death, Peter rebuked Jesus, and Jesus turns to Peter and say’s “get behind me Satan”
g. Peter must have felt like all was lost. The Lord is going to do something for them here. He is going to move their faith from faith to sight. He will show them His glory. Show them what it is all about.
e. The Lord is going to do something for them here. He is going to move their faith from faith to sight. He will show them His glory.
h. They had faith, now Jesus would give them sight.
7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
II Corinthians
f. We do walk by faith. Jesus was still on earth at this time. He had not been to the cross and risen from the dead, it was all still being written. The apostles were given power, so people could see the Gods power. But we have it all written in Gods word. So our faith is great to believe and not see. All though God will show us.
f. This a great miracle, but when you look at a list of the miracles of Jesus, it most likely isn’t there. But it is the greatest record pier to the resurrection.
2 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.
3 And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
Around 30 years later Peter would write about his great event.
2 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.
II Peter
16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
Fables in VS 16, is myth's. Peter in letting the People. Many taught that the teachings of Jesus was a myth. Peter in these verse shares what He saw. He saw the glory of of Jesus. Peter tells about a real event. It wasn’t a vision like John would see when he the book of Revelation. This was real, they would witness it. But Jesus would tell them not to talk about it until He rose from the dead. Which they still didn’t understand.
Jesus takes Peter, James and John. Six days after He had made the statement in VS 1.
a. It was not uncommon for Jesus to take Peter, James and John aside for some extra training – He was giving some intense training fo these future church leaders.
b. Jesus called for the three in the room when Jarius’ daughter was raised from the dead ()
c. And was this inner circle was invited to be with Jesus when He poured His heart out in prayer on the Mount of Olives ().
d. It’s not that He loved them more, but it seem there was something special about them. Perhaps they were more receptive to His Love. Maybe they had more of an understanding of Him, and they had drawn closer to Him.
8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
James
Hymn “I am thine” Page 290
1. Wed night prayer meeting is a great time for our church to draw closer to God. (Pray like it matters book) I myself want to draw closer to God. In the KJV it say “draw nigh” means to make near, to approach. Before sin Adam and Eve had no distance existed. But now there is a distance that can not be measured.
a. But we can draw close to God. First through salvation. Then we can become closer through prayer, and living a Godly life.
b. Apparently these 3 were closer to Jesus.
c. So the 4 of them went up to pray. While Jesus was praying, (Luke records Him praying) while he praying (They are sleeping) He changed. The word is transfigured – His whole appearance changed. The Greek word for metamorphosis, which is the same word we use in English to describe what a caterpillar does to become a butterfly.
d. It’s a complete change. Jesus’ face changed and shone like the sun. Matthew says His clothes were as white as the light, Luke says they were as bright as lightning, and of course we read from Mark how they “became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.”
e. He changed from His earthly human flesh to the glory of who He was. God. This was assurance by sight that He is God.
f. In the Old Testament there are times when God would appear in light. These men knew that. Now they see Jesus as God, what they had faith in, they now had sight of.
g. They needed this to strengthen them. Today we have Gods word. It is through His word that He will do things in our lives to show us His power. He will do things in our lives to strengthen us.
h. What Jesus did here was a radical transformation.
i. Salvation is a transformation:
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
II Corinthains 5:17
7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
Tell story about Richard Eastham.
a. When you become a Christians it is a transformation. But will still have to grow in our spiritual walk. Once you are saved, you’re going to lose it, but is you are not growing in your faith you will conform to the was of the world.
b.
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
2
Conformed: It means fashioning yourselves according to. In other words we are not to fashion ourselves after this present evil age.
1. We are not God as Jesus is, and the transformation here was to show His disciples His glory. Our transformation is not to be God, but to be new.
For everyone that saw Jesus (in human flesh) there was no evidence that He was God. He looked like everyone else .He had done things (miracles) but here is visible evidence that He was God.
Peter saw Jesus as the Christ, and when Jesus speaking of His suffering and His death had knocked the wind out of their sail.
a. Just as Jesus speaking of His suffering and His death had knocked the wind out of their sail. Things can happen in our lives that will do the same to us.
Things can happen in our lives that will do the same to us.
b. We may not see the sight that Peter, James and John saw. But we have the evidence in Gods word. Reading God’s word, spending time in prayer will be us and give us the strength we need to carry on.
c. Jesus more greater then they could imagine. What H would do, (His death and resurrection) would change everything.
d. He is still great today. He still saves souls. He still shows us His glory and power.
e. You feel like it is so hard to do what God wants you do. It may seem so hard to live a Godly life?
13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
P
d. There are times when you may feel down and out. You feel like spiritually you can’t go on.
10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
Isaiah
e. Do you ever feel like the temptations that the devil is hitting you with is more then you can handle?
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
I Corinthians
f. Do you ever feel like burdens are so heavy that you can’t go on?
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
k.God relieves himself and His glory through His word.
l. The scene changed:
4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
Mark 9:
4 And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
Mark 9:
Mark 9:
El
Luke 9:
32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
Exploring the Gospel of Mark: An Expository Commentary B. How It Was Revealed (9:1–13)
Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared. Moses represented the law, Elijah the prophets. Both were men of might and miracle in their day. Moses died and God buried him on Mount Nebo. He represents the resurrected saints at the Rapture. Elijah was caught up living into heaven. He represents raptured saints, caught up alive into heaven at the Rapture.
Jesus is praying. The 3 of them are sleeping This would happen again.
Elab on the rapture:
a. The 3 were talking. What were they talking about?
30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
Luke 9:
Decease: Departure. (death)
They were talking about His death.
a. He death had to happen so everyone who chooses to do do can ask for forgiveness.
b. The disciples wanted Jesus to set up His kingdom here on earth. They did not want Him to die. That is what the transfiguration was for, to communicate that the death of Jesus was what it was all about.
c. His death did not deny His glory.
e. His death was not an interruption of the plan.
f. So they see Jesus,Moses and Elijah talking. And Peter say to say something. You would think he would learn.
5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
6 For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.
Mark
Here is something good to get out of this.
5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
Mark 9:
Why did he say this?
6 For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.
1. Here is a good point to this. If you don’t know what to say, don’t say anything.
a. Holy fear. Amazement of what a were seeing. This was a divine WOW moment.
b. Moses and Elijah talking about the death of Jesus (cross) Peter interrupts them. He still what to establish a kingdom now. He wants build tabernacles for them (fest of the tabernacles) Elijah comes back at the end (Malachi)
c. What Peter wants now is not in God’s has planned.
7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
8 And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.
7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
8 And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.
Mark 9:
Now God the father shows up, “a cloud overshadowed them” Matthew says a bright cloud. And it engulfs them. Luke tells us they entered the cloud.
Mark 9:7
a. The voice from the cloud “This is my beloved son” Luke adds the chosen one” Hear is what He says. “Listen to Him”
Elab on what has just happened.
b. Peter had just spoken, and God says. “This is my beloved son, listen to Him”
c. Listen to what? ( In this case here) To what He has to say about His death.
d . His kingdom would come in this time. But His death had to come first.
e. For you and me. Are we listening to God? Are we listening to what HE has to say to us?
f. For someone here, it may be you need to get saved. Don’t worry about what others think.
g. For others, what is it that God is speaking to you about?
