Scripture Dialogue

25 Therefore, putting away lying, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor,,ad because we are members of one another. 26 Be angry and do not sin.,ae Don’t let the sun go down on your anger,

25 Therefore, putting away lying, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor,,ad because we are members of one another. 26 Be angry and do not sin.,ae Don’t let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and don’t give the devil an opportunity.

29 No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear. 30 And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by him for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander be removed from you, along with all malice. 32 And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.

One of the most fitting passages of Scripture that I could think of that pertains to dialoging with other comes out of , because Paul addresses the attitudes of approachability when it comes to characteristics of healthy communication
In verse 25 Paul says that we are to “put away lying and speak truth to one another”. Of course Paul is referring to the relationship we are to have with one another as Christians, but this should also be a characteristic we should have with everyone, especially non-believers. We should always be ready to have a characteristic of honesty with all that we communicate with.
He goes on to say in verse 26 that, “Be angry and do not sin.
Don’t let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and don’t give the devil an opportunity.” In every relationship that we will have there is bound to be disagreement. How we handle those disagreements says much about how we value the other person.
Paul encourages us to not let our emotions get out of control when we disagree with someone else and allow the devil the opportunity to destroy the relationship with the other person. Paul says we are to not let the sun go down on our anger. In essence Paul is saying we should do our best to deal with relationship issues and stay within the day and not let them bleed into the next and allow it to change how we view the other person. By doing so we commit to attacking the problem and not the other person.

And finally Paul finishes the chapter by saying, “ 29 No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear. 30 And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by him for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander be removed from you, along with all malice. 32 And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”

When we dialogue, especially with those we disagree, we must be reminded to respond and not react. How we respond to those we disagree with makes all the difference between having to repair a relationship of words spoken in the heat of the moment or restore the relationship to one that we value and treasure.
The Scripture is clear: When we dialogue with others, it isn’t just what is said or how it is said that is important. Of equal importance is the attitude of that we maintain. Our attitudes will determine our approachability
