Introduction

Good morning, brothers and sisters. It gives me a great privilege to open God’s Word with you.

I entitled the message, “Spiritual Amnesia.”

I think all of us are forgetful about something. Some of us are bad with names. Some of us may easily forget where we parked our car in a mall. Some of us may forget our spouse’s birthday. Or worse, if you’re married, I hope you don’t forget your wedding anniversary.

Are you the type of person who forgets people’s names, or forgets where you parked your car in the mall?

I don’t know what you do to remember important things. I use Google Calendar and other apps remind myself.

Why do we forget?

The Cure Of Spiritual Amnesia

1. Believers Are Commanded To Remember

I don’t know how many times you have read through the book of Deuteronomy. But, one of the commandments that Moses repeatedly gives throughout this book is the word, “You Shall Remember.”

If you know the story of the Bible, then you would be familiar that the Israelites are constantly forgetful of what God has done for them in the past.

The Israelites witnessed God’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt by sending plagues. The Israelites witnessed God’s victory over Pharoah and the Egyptian soldiers at the Red Sea. The Israelites witnessed God providing for their needs. The Israelites witnessed God’s glory at Mount Sinai.

Yet, they forgot who God was and rebelled against Him. Forgetfulness of God seems to be more than our cognition or memory in our brain. Forgetfulness of God is spiritual. I would argue that because of sin, we are prone to forget God and His Word.

This forgetfulness is not so much of “being bad at names.” This forgetfulness is more about “being bad at obedience.”

People who say that they’ll believe in God if they can see Him don’t know what they’re saying. We are given a clear in example in Scripture that seeing God does not always lead to faith.

Scripture stresses the importance of being reminded of God’s work with His people in the past. Where in the world do we remind ourselves of God’s Work? It is having the discipline to constantly and daily read the Bible.

God told the Israelites to REMEMBER the way of God. It is another word for commandments. God gave them His commandments ever since they arrived at Mount Sinai where they received the 10 commandments and other laws.

God’s commands are found in the Bible. Where else do we find God’s commandments?

The way we can remember God’s commands is by obeying His word and fearing Him.
